SQUAMISH TIMES May 5, 1981 page 3 Cap Satellite planned for Squamish The designing for a new satellite centre in Squamish is anticipated to start early this year for completion in 1982, the five-year education plan for Capilano College states. The centre will consolidate most of the Squamish activity. Currently the main Howe Sound facilities are the old forestry service building used for basic education programs, the service centre on Cleveland Avenue, and a learning centre on Second Avenue. The plan, which encompasses ^ h e years from 1981 to 1986, lists lecial projects to 1986. These are: • A child-minding service established on, or near, the Lynnmour Campus in North Vancouver to increase accessibility for older, part-time learners. • Services required to ensure accessibility for disabled adults will be augmented. • Some development of learning materials to assist students to learn at their own pace and in their own homes will take place. • The feasibility of offering a full range of summer programs and services will be explored. • Co-operation with other institutions and community agencies will be secured until the college is able to provide the programs and services expected of it. • Institutional and management information research will be developed to keep pace with the growing need for informationbased planning. • Information services will be expanded for better communication with the community serviced by the college. • Additional library/media centre services will be automated to permit more service to patrons by personnel. • Increased education leave opportunities will be made available to personnel, to ensure that programs and services remain current. Institutional priorities to 1986 are: • Preference for enrolment will be given to qualified applicants from the college region, except for programs unique to the lower mainland. • More full-time students will be admitted to programs leading to certification, both to respond to demand and to provide a broader curriculum base for part-time students. • Plans to expand accessibility of part-time students to certificate programs will be pursued vigorously. • There will be a significant increase in vocational training until 1983. Further program development will take place in all curriculum areas in balanced fashion in response to community and provincial need. • Campus life will be enhanced by the provision of increased space for study and recreation. • Instructional services, particularly counselling, will be expanded in proportion to the increase in courses and programs. • The current single day/evening timetables will be maintained, with substantial increase of evening and weekend programming, with adequate support services. • The Lynnmour campus will be developed further by the construction of a multi-use teaching building, a gymnasium and a theatre and by upgrading of existing portable buildings. • Travel and living allowances will be provided to students in more remote parts of the college region to improve their accessibility to post-secondary education opportunity. • Campus facilities will be built in Squamish and a permanent, primary location on the Sunshine Coast will be selected.
