Many of this year's most exciting changes revolve around the development of new venues. The final weekend of the Festival, formerly at the Plaza of Nations, will move to Vancouver's new community arts centre-the Roundhouse and the adjacent David Lam Park. This flagship 'festival within a festival' is unique in North America and over the years it has served both audiences and musicians well. • It see!11snearly impossible to give the artists performing here the recognrtron they deserve. And at the risk of leaving out some truly great shows, I want to point out some gems which should not be missed! Many real musicians ~apart from the igh profile headliners) give this Festival an international flavour. The virtuoso pianist, Georg Graewe (Germany) will be featured in a half dozen concerts in various contexts with musicians, including Barry Guy, John Butcher, Steve Arguelles (UK), Francois Houle, Peggy Lee, Dylan van der Schyff (Vancouver), Mats Gustafsson, Raymond Strid (Sweden), Luc Houtkamp, Gert Jan Prins, Michael Moore (Holland). If creative sounds prgue your interest, look for these names in the program. Watch lor the all star trio of Ray Anderson, Christy Doran and Han Bennink; Schismatics (Holland); legendary pianist, Fred Van Hove (Belgium), the great German trombonist, Konrad Bauer will work with Vancouver's Brad Muirhead, Benoit Delbecq/Hask Quartet from France; Guillermo Gregorio, Jason Hwang lkue Mori (U.S.A.) and Charles Papassof, Paul Plimley,Jean Beaudet, (Canada). The Festival encourages collaboration; and thrs year's event doesn't disappoint on that score. The Asian flavour of the Festival will be reflected with an ex,r;anded series (seven shows) at Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Gardens. I heard the Carmen Project' of Enrico Ra~a, (Italy's top jazz artist) at the Willisau Festival rn Switzerland and rt s wonderful. Many thanks to Andre Menard of the Montreal Jazz Festival for his support of Rava's Canadian tour. Other highlights: Vienna Art Orchestra celebrates it's 20th anniversary with a Canadian tour· the legendary bop saxophonist, Jackie McLean finally tours; Carof Sloane visits lor the first time and Diana Krall truly headlines the opening night show. An embarrassment of riches· we think so! A /inal note: Bill C-71, which threatens to dramatically restrict tobacco company sponsorship of the arts is one of the most assinine attacks on culture ever devised by the federal government. Sponsorship by du Maurier has contributed immeasurably to the arts in this country. This long time initiative, very rare in the corporate sector, should be encouraged and applauded, not effectively prohibited. Coastal Jazz and Blues Society would like to acknowledge the support of a sponsor that has stood by us for well over a decade. A heartfelt thank you is in order. ~& ::r Ken Pickering Artistic Director Coastal Jazz and Blues So I On behalf of the Government of British Columbia, best wishes and congratulations to everyone, es[l_eciallyvolunteers and staft, involved in this 12th annual du Maurier International Jazz Festival Vancouver. Since her fabulous performance at last year's Festival, the Nanaimo-born pianist and vocalist has received a Grammy nomination for Best Jazz Vocalist, won the New Star Award from the prestigious Swing Journal of Japan and topped the Critic's Polls in Down Beat and Ja=iz magazines. All For You, her magnificent tribute to Nat King Cole has sold over 200,000 copies worldwide while the New York Times put the album on its lop ten releases for 1996. As if that was not enough, Canadian astronaut Bob Thirsk took her CDs with him on a space shuttle mission. Recent appearances at Carnegie Hall and The Algonquin in New York City have left audiences gaping in amazement. No wonder! This Canadian jazz sensation is a potent double threat. TrombonistRay Anderson is a monster. Equal parts experimentalist, vaudevillian and virtuoso, he plays faster and with more variations of lone and timbre than his contemporaries. Be it basic blues, an intricate original or a straightahead blowing lune,· Ray injects his music with extraordinary energy and feeling. He's also a helluva composer providing lyrical swingers, laid-back waltzes and highly complex pieces. And he does it all with a bristling sense of humour. He is at home with music ranging from Braxlon's totally scored pieces to free improv, Latin music for dancers, nee-bop and funk bands. Swiss guitaristChristy Doran is a superb technician with a wild imagination. He has a fierce tone and an uncompromising attitude as an improviser. Over the years he's played with Fredy Studer, Carla Bley, Trilok Gurtu, Louis Sclavis and others. His concerts at last year's Festival featuring the music of Jimi Hendrix, were immensely popular and well received. Dutch percussionistHan Bennink is also astonishing. He makes music on anything in his path-drums, cardboard boxes, stepladders and tabletops included. Hilariously talented, Bennink's performances are enlightening as well as side-splitting affairs. The Clusone Trio is one of his current proiects but he's worked with everyone from Dexter Gordon and Sonny Rollins to Willem Breuker and Cecil Taylor. This trio is a must-see. After Desmond left in 1967, Gerry Mulligan became a member of the group and Dave's sons joined later. In the '80s reedman Jerry Bergonzi and clarinetist Bill Smith toured with Brubeck. He's a passionate player with a highlycharged emotional style. After studying with Bud Pawell and working with Thelonious Mank, Jackie made his recording debut in 1951 at age 19 with Miles Davis on a session called Dig. Although greatly influenced by Charlie Parker during this time, McLean was already moulding his distinctive sound. A period with CharlesMingus, followed by a stintwith Art Blakey'sJazz Messengers, saw McLean develop as one of the true masters of his instrument. He also began to record as a leader. During the '60s, McLean was one of the few established "bebop" players to embrace new developments in the music. He introduced many adventurous young stylists to the jazz scene-Tony Williams, Jack Dejohnette, Woody Shaw and Cecil McBee to name a few. In the '70s, he became an educator teaching at Hartt College in Hartford where he developed a jazz degree program. Among numerous awards, Jackie was invited to perform in Paris in 1989 to help commemorate the bicentennial of the French Revolution. He continues to tour worldwide and to record on Blue Note. In 1965, he met the world-renowned maestro Pandit Ravi Shanker, who was to become his most profound musical influence. Karlik became a formal disciple of the maestro almost a decade later. The maturing and deepening of Karlik's musical sensibilities through his long association with his Guru make him Shankar's foremost disciple. Kartik performs extensively in India and abroad. His concerts are wildly cathartic beginning typically with a slow improvised contemplative melody. As the collaborating musicians join in, the music becomes more rhythmic. Eventually the raga takes off, exploding into all sorts of explorations and permutations. Fingers flying, Katrik's incredible sitar skills are a wonder to behold.
