Sports update The basketball season opened on Friday with a game between the Blues men’s team and Columbia College from Clearbrook at the Delbrook gym. Saturday night the Blues men’s and women’s teams played their grads. Among the home games coming up is the Blues women vs UBC J.V. on Friday, October 30 at 6:30 pm. N.Cafe has Halloween specials The staff of the North Cafeteria is inviting everyone to join them for a day of “devilish fun” on Thursday, October 29, when they pledge to scare away your hunger with ghoulish specialties. The ambitious will have an opportunity to bob for apples and win a free meal, or guess the number of Kandy Kisses in the jar and win a Palm Dairies sweater. Women prove more literate In the latest news about the state of literacy in Canada, as reported by the Southam News Service, is the revelation that among Canadian adults women are more literate than men. There are more women than menin Canada (51% to 49%), but 53.5% of functional illiterates are men. Women outscored men on 40 of 61 literacy items on the Southam Literacy Survey, while men did better on only 14 items, and the women spent a minute less on average doing the test. In addition, the survey showed that women go to public libraries 50% more often than men, write 40% more letters or notes, and read more books. 83% of women surveyed said they read or looked at a book during the past six months, compared to 73% of men.
