No, they weren't aca- demics granted an early reprieve -- these were women ranging in age from their early 20's to late 50's who finished the 12 week Homemaker Program. The program was taught at Queen Mary School with field trips to adult day care centres, the G.F. Strong Re- habilitation Unit, Lion's Gate Hospital, and handicapped people's homes. The stu- dents, who are now qualified to look after handicapped people, the elderly, young mo- thers, alcoholics, stroke and heart attack patients and others in their own homes have plenty of jobs out there waiting for them. Hospitals and extended care units are very crowded and the prov. govt. and Victorian Order of Nurses need people to take care of those needing some assistance and keep them in their own homes. Or, to look at it the other way, if you were sick or elderly wouldn't you prefer to stay at home rather than go to hospital? At any rate, the 18 homemakers say the course was just fantas- tic and now they're out to make themselves a living. Congratulations to the graduates and their hard working instructors Monica Mogg, Terry Adler and Elizabeth Wilkes and good luck with the new jobs. c= |_| Harold Kirchner will be in Sechelt Satur- day the 4th talking to the Sunshine Coast Women's Program's conference on the Chang- ing World of Women and Work. Roughly 65 people attended, says Rachel Aarons and they said they like our services - in fact they want more. The Women's Advisory Committee urged expansion of the Women's Centre, students requested more academic courses, an E. In- dian man spoke ion behalf of his wife about the value of English classes, the Chamber of Commerce and logging industry expressed a need for more career/vocational courses as well as basic education, and Whistler, Pemberton and Mount Currie residents were there expressing hopes for college of- ferings in their areas. As Rachel put it, "All indications are that Capilano College has tremendous support in the Squamish satellite.'' Now that's great feedback. c= ca Our Ex-Chairman of the Board, Dr. Lalit Srivastava made a headline in the SFU Week last week. He has been researching seaweed growth and harvesting techniques for about ten years and has just been awarded the first license to harvest and process kelp in B.C.
