DECEMBER 18, 1989 THE INFORMER PAGE 5 Moving to Suits Santa Needs Your Help There is no picture of Steve Gallagher available; however, several photographers have been alerted to catch the former executive councillor of 01EU on film before he changes into suits. Our new manager of computer systems has a long history with Cap. Steve started life here as a university transfer student. After he finished his degree (a double major in history and political science) at the University of Victoria, he made his way back to Cap and the two year Business Management Computer Systems Program. This led to his job as the first computer operator on campus. "This office was piled high with boxes," he says, waving to the narrow cubby hole that now is crammed with three desks and the usual office effluvia. Since then, he has seen several transformations of our computer system (three varieties of the mainframe HP), and the blossoming of microcomputers on campus. In 1983, there was one micro lab with 20 Apple machines; there are now three labs, 350 machines, and more to come. The Computing Services department now employs three people "who do the work of 10," says Steve. "It's amazing how much we get done here." The position of manager was created to help deal with the increasing demands made on the staff, and to allow for some long-range planning and analysis. Although he says he may miss the programming time, Steve looks forward to the opportunity to manage the system. Steve's experience as councillor of the staff union gave him some insight into people management and his relationship (son of) to former president Paul Gallagher may help his transition to A Building, though long-time fellow operator Bob Walker says there will be no problems with authority: "If I don't like what he tells me, I can just say .... " (The Informer is censored.) Daphne Maziar and Bob will be joined by another operator to take Steve's place, so it is hoped their collective load will be eased somewhat by the changes. You can find Steve, suited or not, in Room A211. In the Christmas spirit, the Word Processing Centre is sponsoring a family with two children: Holly is ten and Vicky is six. Any food items, toys, and/or clothing you could donate would be greatly appreciated. There is a hamper in our department and one at the switchboard. Merry Christmas! WPC International Business Program The commencement date for the International Business Program has been moved to September 1990. We have found that potential students need more time to prepare for the program. The response from the public, business, and government has been excellent, and we expect the September class will be fully subscribed. -Anne Watson New Award The North Vancouver Women's Liberal Commission has announced a new award which will pay tuition fees for one term of study at the College to a student taking at least one course in Women's Studies. The award is based on need, not academic standing. People interested in applying for this award are asked to submit a 500-word essay on the subject, "How Equality can be Achieved in our Society", and fill out the application form available in the Financial Aid department. The application deadline is December 20, 1989. Call 984-4966 for more information. Library's Christmas Family Once again, the library faculty and staff have contacted the North Vancouver Christmas Bureau to obtain the name of a family who needs some help this Christmas season. Donations of non-perishable food or money would be gratefully appreciated. Contact Dawn Hughes, local 2127. Pig-Dissecters Have Heyday in Bio Lab A class of Biology 205 students went wild in the lab recently. After dissecting their fetal pigs, they held a "Pig Naming Contest". Although this is an annual event, the entries this year were so entertaining, lab technician Barry Williamson felt compelled to submit them to the Informer. The winner of the contest was Yvonne Lucardie with the name ''Fetal Attraction". Runners-up were: Tammy-Fae Bacon, E.Pig Glottis, Menachan Bacon, Dr. Frankenswine, Magnum P.I.G., and Van der Ham. The winner got a pound of bacon. Management Conference for Women The B.C. Ministry responsible for Women's Programs has provided funding for a Leadership and Management Development Conference for Women Employed in Colleges and Institutes. It will be held May 4, 5, and 6, 1990. The Conference will provide an opportunity for female staff, faculty, and administrative employees to increase the4' knowledge and skill levels in management areas. It will address major issues faced by managers in the educational system and highlight successful female role models. This initiative is intended to support interested women in developing the expertise necessary to qualify for advancement and to facilitate increased representation of women in leadership positions. We are anticipating strong representation from Capilano College as delegates to this conference. Watch for additional information over the next few months, or contact Frieda Wiebe (2141), who is on the conference planning committee.
