the Volume IX No. 17 October 13, 1987 informer On-campus forum coming Oct. 17 The Mayors of West Vancouver, and North Vancouver City and District have formed a committee to recommend a cultural policy for the North Shore, and as part of their research they are holding a Forum on the Arts at the College on Saturday, October 17. The Forum on the Arts is an all day event which will include speakers and discussions, an exhibit by art faculty and students, performances by our Music students, and (not to be overlooked) lunch. Back from Sweden Sculpture instructor David Marshall (left) and assistant, Art student John Urquhart, are back at Capilano after a summer of granite carving in Sweden, and since we are typing this up so close to deadline we had better rush right ahead and tell you that Marshall will be lecturing on his carving experiences in Sweden and Yugoslavia on Tuesday, October 13 from 3 to 5 pm in A117. More details further down the page, but now back to our story. Marshall was one of four sculptors invited to carve in He!singborg, a small city in Sweden which is working on becoming an art centre. This was the first year of their granite carving program, which is slated to continue annually. The other artists who were there were Marcel Petit and Michel Sprogis from Paris, and Michael Prentiss of New York. The sculptors were working in black granite, which is highly resistant to weathering, but extremely hard and requires diamond tipped tools to carve. Continued on page 5... Sechelt building officially opens The workmen have stopped lurking in corners banging and buzzing, the staff has finished moving in and even the landscaping is being finished around Capilano College’s new building in Sechelt, which will be Officially Opened on Friday, October 16.
