Informer Page 4 April 27, 1988 FACULTY SCHOLARSHIP Robert Sherrin (English) has published two short stories and will have an article, “Beyond the Lines” in the next issue of Vanguard. Gladys Hindmarch (English) has a new novel out, The Watery Part of the World, and an article in Contemporary Literary Criticism. Sharon Thesen (English) has published three articles in West Coast Review, Brick, and Ellipse. She also been nominated for a second time for the Governor General’s Award for Poetry. John Dixon (Philosophy), as President of the B.C. Civil Liberties Association, has presented at 10 symposia before audiences at all three B.C. universities, and the provincial government. He most recently spoke at a conference on Ethics, Law, and Regulation in Novel Therapies (NTS) and HIV Diseases. His work with the Assoc. directly impinges on his academic discipline, Political Philosophy. Pierre Coupey (English) is currently opening three painting shows at local galleries — as painter, and has recently been published in a new anthology — as poet. Bill Schermbrucker (English) wil! soon be publishing a book of historical fiction, Mimosa, as well as a review in Event, and a memoir piece for CBC (airing May 8 on Arts National, 12:08 p.m. on CBC FM and 8 p.m. on the AM dial.) Sherry McKay (Fine Art) is giving a paper on “Domestic Architecture in Vancouver, 1940-65” at the 1988 Conference of the Society for the Study of Architecture in Canada. Reid Gilbert (English) recently completed adjudicating and revising the Canadianization of a 400-page manuscript for a popular writing text for Holt, Rhinehart, Winston. He has also been invited to present a paper at the University of Western Ontario in May. Dave ra ll ey Josephine Jungic (Fine Art) will publish an article, “Joachimist Prophecies in Sebastiano del Piombo’s Borgherini Chapel and Raphael’s Transfiguration” in the Journal of the Warburg and Courtauld Institutes of London University. Professor Jungic is the first Canadian scholar ever to be published in this prestigious journal. She has also, this spring, accepted an invitation from Dr. Marjorie Reeves of Oxford University to contribute to a new collection of critical essasys, “On the Renaissance Papacy and the significance of Prophecy in the cultural ambience of Rome during the first three decades of the sixteenth century.” Get Well Soon to Barry Cogswell, (Studio Art) who recently suffered a ruptured appendix, and to Carmen Orton (Word Processing Centre) recovering from an operation. Welcome back to Adele Herbert (Extension) who just returned from two weeks in Japan visiting her ESL-teaching daughter. Joan Acosta (ESL) has won an Honourable Mention for Innovation in Teaching through the Association of Canadian Community Colleges. The award will be presented at the ACCC Annual General Meeting on June 1 in New Brunswick. Sue Carter will be retiring from the library at the end of April. Tanya Cooke, technician in Clay and Textile Arts, will be going to France this summer to work with Paul and Babette Deggan at their Summer Centre for the Arts. Marie Crowther (Financial Aid/ Registrar’s Office) has just been accepted in a new job for the B.C. College of Teachers at their Vancouver office. She will be one of two Evaluation Officers working along with a Registrar. These three will build eventually to a staff of 15, so Marie has the added challenge of helping to establish a new office. Jaswinder Kelly, our cleaner from “Convenience Building Maintenance” (we contract out our cleaning now), has just had a baby boy. Nine-pound Sonny Kelly was born April 16. Congratulations to Lesley Gillis (Financial Aid) and Ken who will “tie the knot” Saturday, May 28. Board member Nancy Treiber has been elected to the B.C. Chamber of Commerce as Regional Director for North Vancouver, West Vancouver, Whistler, Squamish, and Pemberton. Frank Reid (French) helped in judging “Festival national d’art oratoire” sponsored by Parents for French Association. School children from mixed backgrounds in French offered short speeches on a subject of their choice, and were awarded points for topic, rhetoric, grammar, and style. The results were very high. Judges were drawn from a wide background of community members connected with French language and culture.Parents - interested in placing their children in any of the programs, please contact a member of the French Department. Doug Jardine spoke on “Community College Consortial approach to International Education” at the American Association of Community and Junior Collegés convention in Las Vegas April 23 -26. Besides speaking for the College, Jardine, as their Secretary, represented the Northwest International Education Association. Robert McKee (Central Stores) has just returned from the Canadian National Ringette Championships in Winnipeg where he was coaching three provincial girls’ teams.
