On June 13, the wife of U.S. ambassador to Canada, Paul Cellucci, paid a visit to the Squamish campus of Capilano College. While her husband attended meetings being held at Whistler, Jan Cellucci decided to meet some students in the College’s Gateways program, as well as a few College employees still on campus for the summer months. “Mrs. Cellucci is keenly interested in education, particularly libraries, as that is her professional background, “said campus manager, Casey Dorin. “She spent about one and a half hours speaking with students and answering their questions about her role.” Amazing student wins top honours She has been called a perfect student and not only because of her perfect 4.33 GPA in 2001. Nor for the fact that she was the 2001 winner of the IT Student of the Year award presented by the Canadian Information Processing Society. Serena Bertoli-Haley, a graduate of the three-year Business Computing Co-op program, is this year’s recipient of the Governor General’s Collegiate Bronze Medal. This award is presented to the top all round student for her contribution to her classmates, to the College and to society. Serena outperformed | | graduates from the University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University, British Columbia Institute of Technology, as well as other colleges in B.C., to win this medal. While in the BCOP program, Serena was required to take 28 credit courses. She achieved a grade point average of 4.22 with 27 A+s and one A. Coach of the year, Brad Hudson Capilano College volleyball coach, Brad Hudson, was named Coach of the Year for 2001/02 by the B.C. Volleyball Association. Brad was presented the award at the annual BCVA provincial banquet in Kelowna on May 25. The top coach earned the award by guiding his team of young athletes to a second place finish in the British Columbia College Athletic Association conference and a fourth place finish in the Canadian College Athletic Association’s national champion- ship. The Blues won 35 games and lost 31 games, which positioned them as fifth seed entering the provincial collegiate championship. They finished with a silver medal and earned a berth in the national championship where they finished fourth. Brad’s team garnered B.C. tournament all-star awards, BCCAA conferences all-star selections, placed players on the CCAA national tournament second all-star team, and received a national team tryout for one of his male athletes. The Emergency Response Team gained an abundance of experience through the realism of the scenario, which hinged on your ability to adhere to strict operational guidelines while immersing yourself into a structured role of a deranged fugitive.
