I would l i k e t o t a k e t h i s o p p o r t u n i t y t o p r o v i d e you w i t h a
progress r e p o r t on t h e t h r e e new c a r e e r programs we a r e c u r r e n t l y
r e s e a r c h i n g and which we hope t o o f f e r a t t h e C o l l e g e should our
assessment i n d i c a t e a need.
The t h r e e programs c u r r e n t l y under development a r e Speech
T h e r a p i s t , Law C l e r k , and P h y s i c a l T h e r a p i s t . I have been a b l e t o
make some i m p o r t a n t c o n t a c t s and d i s c u s s w i t h a number o f people
the f e a s i b i l i t y f o r t h e above programs.
Please see t h e a t t a c h e d t i m e t a b l e o f events. I w i l l compile a
complete p r o p o s a l based on t:he g u i d e l i n e s o u t l i n e d by you i n your
memorandum o f August 3 r d once a l l i n f o r m a t i o n i s made a v a i l a b l e . I n
the meantime, I would l i k e t o r e q u e s t t h a t Capilano C o l l e g e be g i v e n
p r i m a r y c o n s i d e r a t i o n f o r o f f e r i n g t h e above mentioned programs.

A. SPEECH THERAPIST
Purpose:
Speech P a t h o l o g y and A u d i o l o g y a r e r e l a t i v e l y new p r o f e s s i o n s
i n Canada.

A l t h o u g h speech p a t h o l o g i s t s have been employed by

h o s p i t a l c l i n i c s f o r many y e a r s , these s e r v i c e s a r e now b r a n c h i n g o u t
i n t o o t h e r f i e l d as t h e f r e q u e n c y o f d e f e c t s and need f o r c o r r e c t i o n
becomes b e t t e r known.

Language r e h a b i l i t a t i o n , r e m e d i a l r e a d i n g ,

a u d i t o r y t r a i n i n g , v o c a t i o n a l and e d u c a t i o n c o u n s e l l i n g o f t h e hard
o f h e a r i n g and i n d u s t r i a l n o i s e c o n t r o l a r e some o f t h e newer areas.
School boards a r e e s t a b l i s h i n g h e a r i n g s c r e e n i n g programs and
employing f u l l t i m e t h e r a p i s t s .

O f t e n schools f o r t h e deaf i n c l u d e an

a u d i o l o g i s t and speech t h e r a p i s t on t h e i r s t a f f .

B. LAW CLERK

Purpose:
A Law C l e r k may be d e f i n e d as a t r a i n e d s p e c i a l i s t who i s
capable o f doing independent work under t h e s u p e r v i s i o n o f a B a r r i s t e r
and/or S o l i c i t o r and whose f u n c t i o n i t i s t o r e l i e v e a B a r r i s t e r and/or
S o l i c i t o r o f r o u t i n e l e g a l and a d m i n i s t r a t i v e m a t t e r s .
A lawyer i t i s s a i d l o o k s a f t e r everybody's b u s i n e s s and because
of t h e wide v a r i e t y o f h i s work, i t i s i m p o s s i b l e f o r him t o handle
by h i m s e l f a l l t h e work e n t r u s t e d t o him.

While u l t i m a t e r e s p o n s i b i l i t y

and s u p e r v i s i o n r e s t w i t h t h e Lawyer, t h e Law C l e r k would take much
o f h i s r e s p o n s i b i l i t y and must accumulate a wide knowledge o f a v a r i e t y
of subjects.
The type and amount o f work done i n d i v i d u a l l y and t h e degree o f
supervision w i l l vary.

I n a s m a l l o f f i c e , t h e Law C l e r k m i g h t deal

w i t h almost a l l aspects o f t h e p r o f e s s i o n , w h i l e i n a l a r g e r o f f i c e ,
the tendency would be t o s p e c i a l i z e .

Some o f t h e p o s s i b l e areas o f s p e c i a l i z a t i o n may be Real E s t a t e ,

Probate and E s t a t e s , Corporate Law and L i t i g a t i o n .

Procedure:
1. Contact has been made w i t h Mr. Bae Wallace's s e c r e t a r y t o
arrange a meeting w i t h Mr. Wallace sometime d u r i n g t h e week
o f Feb. 1 s t .
2. Mr. Wallace, we b e l i e v e , i s a person who could p r o v i d e us w i t h
v a r i o u s needs o f t h e p r o f e s s i o n as w e l l as a l i s t o f s p e c i f i c
people i n Law S o c i e t i e s and law f a c u l t i e s who may be a b l e t o
a s s i s t t h e c o l l e g e i n t h e development o f a Law C l e r k program.

o f the Benchers.

C. PHYSICAL THERAPY PROGRAM
Purpose:
T h i s program i s one t h a t would p e r m i t s t u d e n t s t o become members

Technician

( A s s i s t a n t ) i s a t e c h n i c a l worker capable o f p e r f o r m i n g

c e r t a i n t h e r a p y s k i l l s under a r e g i s t e r e d P h y s i c a l T h e r a p i s t .
Graduates o f t h e program whould have t h e a b i l i t y t o a p p l y p h y s i c a l
t h e r a p y s k i l l s , r e c o r d and e v a l u a t e t h e care o f p a t i e n t s , and
understand

the basic p r i n c i p l e s o f i n t e r p e r s o n a l r e l a t i o n s h i p s .

Licensed

P h y s i c a l T h e r a p i s t s may be a b l e t o p r o v i d e t h e necessary

clinical

learning settings f o r the laboratory

experience.

Procedure:
L i m i t e d r e s e a r c h and development i n t o t h e need and s u i t a b i l i t y
for

such a program t o be o f f e r e d a t t h e c o l l e g e has been p o s s i b l e

up t o t h i s p e r i o d i n t i m e .

However, i t appears t h a t t h e r e may be

a need i n t h e area o f P h y s i c a l Therapy as no o t h e r B.C. C o l l e g e has
p r o v i d e d any r e l a t e d t y p e o f t r a i n i n g i n t h i s f i e l d .
