Informer Page 4 October 26, 1988 P E L E And you thought Cap didn't attract interesting = students. Kicking her way to the top Ingrid Katzberg,(left) the Canadian women’s lightweight kickboxing champion, divides her time between training for the Japanese championships in April /89 and completing her second year of Arts courses at Cap. Ingrid began kickboxing one and a half years ago; she has five years of karate under her belt already, and recently discovered a new variation of the Japanese martial art, called shoot boxing, which she says is harder and involves more contact. The 5’4" fighter won that title in Japan in three, three-minute rounds. Kickboxing is still a relatively unpopular sport for women — Ingrid laments the lack of sufficient opponents — but is beginning to attract more attention. Ingrid says “The girls are so aggressive. The guys are cautious and pick their spots (to attack) more. We were really going at each other.” She adds, “I don’t want to do that. I want to fight like a man — with style.” Katzberg won the B.C. title at SFU last March, and has her far- ranging sights on the world title.
