~~ Cap gets grant Of the $14 million allocated to colleges in July from the provincial "Fund for Excellence in Education", Capilano will receive $486,200 for "the creation of an innovative computerized Centre for Achievement and Excellence". The project, which is being organized by Greg Lee, involves a joint agreement with the Canadian Software Company to purchase a computer and develop software for it. Cap is part of a consortium of colleges which are upgrading computers and trading equipment. According to the Ministry's press release, Cap will be developing "specialized educational software packages which can be used for basic skills upgrading as well as the development of skills in more advanced computer applications inword processing, electronic data base searches, and computer assisted instruction" Computer students cont. were 19 of our second year students who developed BOS (the Bookstore Organizing System) for Cap's bookstore. The system is an on-line system which provides complete management reports and forecasting features, and was written using a 4GL programming language. The adjudicators of the contest (from the Ottawa Carleton Research Institute) felt that the "superb documentation won the award for Cap College." Needless to say, program coordinator Richard Longworth was delighted by the win. The students were: Michael Boitson, Garth Chorney, Stewart Debalinhard, Paul Hodson, Blair Jamieson, Jane Justice, Geoffrey Kenny, Leonard Lee, Peter Lovegrove, Tracy Mackenzie, Susanne MacPherson, Simon Matthews, Bruce McClacherty, ,Rohit Pala, Ann Stones, Anthony Sukkel, Robert Thurston, Ian Watson and Hollis Ruth Whittleton. Pick up your new phone book The new Vancouver phone directories are here and are available through the Typing Pool in the basement of A building. Please take your old directory with you when you go down to pick up the new one—they are taking them in for recyling. White weds Everyone who is acquainted with Cap's long time (and hyperactive) Outdoor Recreation specialist Brian White will be interested to note that he is getting married on July 12. Brian's new wife, Kara Middleton, is no stranger to Cap herself, beinga monitor for the summer English Language immersion programs. Congratulations both, and much luck. Closure in Extension The Extension department will be closed for holidays from July 7 to August 1, so if you're just itching to sign up for something (say, for instance, Wine Tasting), you'll just have to hang on. Meanwhile, the Squamish Campus is also closed for the month of July. Opening in Library The circulation desk in the Library is once again open for business, albeit in a new location and with a brand new security system to prevent book loss. Renovations, which have been going on for the past few weeks, are just about complete. Coordinators on deck Summer vacation coordinators for the Academic division are Pierre Coupey, Humanities, for the month of July, Ken Towson in Natural Sciences from July 10 to 23, and John Sayre in Social Sciences who is here for the entire summer. Cap gets plaque Lynn Headwaters Regional Park opened officially last month, and for those of you who haven't visited it yet (or recently) the experience is highly recommended. Brian White and the Qutdoor Recreation department have received a plaque recognizing their contributions to the opening of that park, and the plaque currently hangs in Brian's office. He says that tour groups wishing to see this exhibit are welcome to come around.
