@nformer Alison Came and Tourism instructor, Brian White, grab the spotlight at the first awards ceremony for Bachelor of Tourism Management degree grads. Tourism degree makes its debut A lison Came is a member of the irst graduating class of the Bachelor of Tourism Management degree program offered at Capilano College in conjunction with the British Columbia Open University. Fresh from the Australian Outback, Alison returned to her home in North Vancouver after spending two years as a four-wheel drive tour guide in the Far North of Queensland, Australia. “After completing the two-year diploma program in Outdoor Recreation Management at Capilano College in 1993,” Alison says, “I decided to do my practicum in Australia where I worked as an outdoor education teacher. When the workterm was finished, I tackled Australia’s tropical rainforests as a tour guide.” In August 1996, Alison returned to North Vancouver to continue her studies in Capilano College’s newly-initiated Bachelor of Tourism Management degree program. The intent of the program is to provide the most up-to- date knowledge, innovations, technologies, and management techniques for administrators and entrepreneurs in the tourism industry. The academic credentials earned in the Outdoor Recreation Management diploma program satisfy most of the degree program’s business and tourism foundation courses, and elective requirements. Alison, who was also working at a full-time job while completing her degree, plans on returning to Australia to pursue tourism opportunities that will arise during the 2000 Olympic games being held in September. “After that,” she says, “I hope to return to B.C. to use my experience and enthusiasm to further the tourism industry in this province.” @ e@= Capilano @€ ex College Vol. XXII No. 6 June 29/00
