DIAMA KRALL TRIO
"Nonaimo-born Kroll hos hit the big time."
Andrews, VancouverSun
Pianist/vocalistDiana Kroll is one of the greatest
jazz musicians to emerge from Canada during the
lost decode. Her huge impact on the New York jazz
scene in recent years has positioned her on the
international stage alongside fellow Canadian
pianists Oscar Peterson and Oliver Jones. Quite simply, Diano is one of the finest young musicians in the
world. She combines the vocal stylings of Shirley
Horn and Carmen McRae with the piano influences
of Oscar Peterson and her mentor Jimmy Rowles.
The result is pure ecstocy. Just listen to her reading
of StraightenUp and FlyRightfrom her first CD,
Steppin' Out, or Squeeze Me from her second CD
Only TrustYourHeart. Her third album All For You,
is a magnificent tribute to Nat King Cole. Few young
vocalists con match her maturity, sense of phrasing
and sheer musicianship. Whether a song focuses on
the vocal or calls upon her piano skiIs, K[r,allalways

This marvellous group brings together three of the most exciting instrumentalists on the planet.
Ray Anderson has all but revolutionized the art of trombone playing. Equal parts experimentalist, vaudevillian and virtuoso, he plays faster and with more variations of tone and timbre
than his contemporaries. Be it a basic blues, an intricate original or a straightahead blowing
tune, Ray injects extraordinary energy and feeling into his music. On the evidence of his
many fine albums for Gramavision and other labels, he's also a helluva composer providing
lyrical swingers, laid back waltzes and hig~ly complex pieces. And he does all this with a
bristling sense of humour. Ray has played with Anthony Braxton's quartet as well as leading
many of his own bands, big and small. Marcus Rojas has been hailed as a tuba genius by
everyone from record producer Hal Willner to Whitney Balliett of The New Yorker. The Boston
Phoenixrecently remarked, " ... Rojas is a blend of Motown
bassist James Jameson and a teenage mutant ninja turtle.
With barely a pause, Rojas pumped enough air into that big
brass behemoth to keep it percolating throughout two sets
and, like the late Motown legend, never let a syncopated
beat keep him from building a melodic part as well. This
was tuba you could love solo." Rojas has performed with his
own groups as well as the Metropolitan Opera, Charlie
Haden, Lester Bowie, Lionel Hampton and others. Pheeroan
akLaff's intensely dynamic use of the drum kit has been featured on recent recordings by Mal Waldron, Geri Allen and
Anthony Braxton. His unique treatment of rhythm has also
expanded the structured works of Henry Threadgill as well
as the improvisationol works of Cecil Taylor.

This young and exciting Toronto band is taking the nation by
storm. The release of their first record, First Impressions for
the Bottom Jigglers (SoulShack), and their hit single
Funkmobile, have led many across the country to embrace the
group's groove-oriented sound. All this attention culminated in
a 1994 Juno Award for Best R&B/Soul Recording. Critics
were also smiling on Bass is Base's album, "ever since the
band laid its sexy grooves on the nation ... a whole load of
people have jiggled as ordered ... " (Campus Canada) and
their live show, "working their syncopated magic ... it was
impressive the way this young band had'em eating out of
their hands" (Toronto Star}. Bass is Base puts together a trippy
blend of funk, hip-hop, rap and soul. Their diverse influences
stem from group member's different cultural backgrounds.
Chin is East Indian inspired by his father's traditional singing;
Ivana, French Canadian and Italian, was involved with her
father's wedding band; and Mystic's Trinidadian culture is
deeply rooted in Calypso and other soul music. Check out the

"The most versatile, most innovative Cajun band around, BeauSoleil manages with each album
to both strengthen the music's roots and lengthen its branches."-LA
Times
Nominated for five Grammys, the Louisiana-based BeauSoleil is hailed by critics, fellow musicians, and fans worldwide as America's premier Cajun band. With fiddles and Acadian accordions up front with the singers, this music is festive and irresistably danceable. Cajun music
originated in the bayou deltas of southeastern Louisiana among descendants of 17th century
French refugees from Nova Scotia. The members of BeauSoleil have long been respected as
masters of the tradition but they're also recognized as experimenters who blend in more contemporary influences. The group stirs up a rich, varied musical sauce piquanle that mixes
Cajun and Zydeco music with blues, country, Tex-Mex, Caribbean and every other
style that has made its way down the
Mississippi. Leader/fiddler Michael Doucet
is no purist; his virtuosic flights include
non-Cajun references and he lets the songs
sizzle. We invite you to party with an
ensemble the Rolling Stone calls "the best
damn dance band you'll ever hear." Don't
delay, last year's concert sold out quickly.

Look out! Here they come! Javon Jackson, Tim Hagans,
Greg Osby, Kevin Hays and Bill Stewart-five of the most
talented young musicians on the current jazz scene in one
terrific all-star grouping. But this is not a manufactured jazz
supergroup. The idea for the band took shape when New
York television station WNET enlisted their services (at the
behest of Blue Note Records) for a taped performance at
Sweet Basil. The band members discovered such a strong
chemistry that they decided to further expand their working
relationship. All five had recently recorded albums for Blue
Note, but impressed label executives offered to support the
fledgling ensemble, by scoring it a few club gigs and
arranging studio time. TrumpeterTim Hagans is, at 41, the
elder of the group. With early gigs with Stan Kenton and Woody Herman's bands to his
credit, Hagans went on to perform with big bands led by Bob Mintzer, Maria Schneider and
Gil Evans as well as dates with Gary Peacock, the Yellowjackets and Joe Lovano. At 27,
pianist Kevin Hays has worked with the Harper Brothers, Joshua Redman, Benny Golson,
Roy Haynes and Joe Henderson. Thirty year-old tenor saxophonistJavon Jackson has been
heralded by Vogue as being one pillar of the young tenor triumvirate (along with Joshua
Redman and James Carter). He has worked with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, Elvin Jones,
Benny Green and Ron Carter. Alto saxophonistGreg Osby has worked with a range of jazz
leaders, from John Faddis to Lester Bowie. A co-founder with Steve Coleman of the M-BASE
collective, Osby has been one of jazz's free-thinking rebels since the late '80s. Twenty-eight
year-old drummer Bill Stewart recently made his Blue Note debut with Snide Remarks,an
album of hard-driving and angular tunes written and arranged by the leader. In the last few
years Bill has gigged with Maceo Parker, Lee Konitz, Joe Lovano and John Scofield. The high
calibre talent assembled in this group will undoubtably become an entity greater thqn th,e
sum of its parts. With the marvelous EssietOkon Essieton bass.

delivery rooted in her own poetic lyrics. As did her idols, Ella

she began singing in local supper clubs. But before too
long she was balancing a singing career with acting jobs.
In 1956, she landed a role in the movie The Girl Can't
Help It alongside Jayne Mansfield. Later she appeared in
Nothing But a Man and For Love of Ivy with Sidney Poitier
and most recently in Spike Lee's Mo'Better Blues. Soon
after her brush with film stardom, Abbey began working
with Max Roach, whom she later married. One of their
most powerful collaborations was the album Freedom
Now Suite. She also worked with Sonny Rollins, Wynton
Kelly and Benny Golson among others. Throughout the
?Os and '80s, Lincoln continued to record and work in
the theatre. Since her debut recording, The World is

She has released albums with Stan Getz, Hank Jones,

the years he has performed with Cannonball and Nat Adderley,

but because Marsalis was frequently jamming with quartets
and quintets and not the trios Petersonfavoured, he began to
develop a more band-oriented style. For someoneof his stature
Ellis has a relatively short record catalogue. His most recent
recordings include Whistle Stop, Heart of Gold, Standard

''The music is an evocation of sustained ecstasy... And it is utterly intoxicoting."-Newsweek
The Moster Musicians of Jojouka, an aristocratic tribe of royal pipers hidden in the
mountains of North Africa, have lived peacefully for centuries, playing their entrancing
music for the sultans of Morocco and keeping secret Arcadian rituals alive in their remote
village. The post-war expatriate Euro/ American artists (Willam Burroughs, Paul Bowles)
discovered them in the 1950s and word began to spread of the Moster Musicians' gift. In
the 1960s and '70s, Western rock and jazz musicians (Brion Jones, Ornette Colemon)
made pilgrimages to Jojouka, followed by a colourful parade of seekers eager to travel
back in time to discover the old gods present in Jojouka's folklore. Despite their cachet,
the group hos rarely recorded. Fortunately, two albums exist: BrianJones Presentsthe

"Soulful as hell. .. The

Medeski, Martin &
Wood's genre-smashing
aesthetic makes for an idiosyncratic hybrid that is at once
danceable and provocative, intelligent and visceral. Theirs is
a meeting of musical worlds that pays equal allegiance to
James Brown and Sun Ra, Sly Stone and Larry Young, John
Cage and John Coltrane, Charles Ives and Charles Mingus.
The band draws from early '60s trios, late '60s avatars of
the avant-garde, bebop, and hip-hop, all the while injecting
their own liberated instincts and sly sense of humour into the
mix. They've been called everything from "downtown jazz,"
"avant-rock jazz" to "headbanger jazz." And while there's
much to recommend them to fans of "acid jazz," their imagination and technical fluency send them soaring far above
the bands that adopt that moniker. Call it what you wanna
but the bottom line is groove! And you will! John Medeski

"Minafra's set celebrated a southern Italian sensibility combining a strong sense of melody
and romanticism with an optimistic, skewed irony. Maniacally jumping from poignant ballads
to slapstick antics to bluesy jazz riffs to stately tango to collective free blowing, the sextet
played with inspired abandon. Reminiscent at times of a cross between Fellini and the
Willem Breuker Kollektief, all of the musicians played with a raw freshness... Minafra is a
master of both trumpet and flugelhorn, his phrasing a charge of slippery, careening runs and
cutting blue notes extended at times by playing without a mouthpiece ... or playing through a
bullhorn, eliciting images of a squalling electric guitar. His
occasional wild scat vocals interjected the music with
rhythms of skewed free-bop hip-hop."

Pino Minafra made a huge impact at last year's festival

We invite you to a special
party with an extraordinary
nine-piece band from San
Francisco that'll have you on
the dance floor and keep
you there all night. Their
performances at previous
jazz festivals have been
high-energy rave-upshouserocking, sweat-inducing sounds that will cure
whatever ails ya. Centered around the wailing sax of John Firmin aka Johnny Nocturne
and inspired by the honkers and screamers of '50s jazz and blues, "the little big band"
moves effortlessly from sophisticated swing to big beat rock and roll. With a torrid fourpiece brass section and the scorching vocals of Brenda Boykin, they have a brilliant arsenal
to target the blues and beyond. Blending influences from King Curtis, lo Sam "The Man"
Taylor, to the sophisticated blues of the Buddy Johnson Orchestra, as well as the more jazzoriented approaches of Arnett Cobb and Illinois Jacquet, Nocturne's band cooks with tunes
like HarlemNocturneand Wai/in' Daddy.Joining the band is legendary New Orleans

Joey Spampinato bass, Al

blues, hard rock, country,
traditional roots-rock and folk
as "omni-pop," a category
they may very well have to
themselves. You just can't beat
the NRBQ for its combination
of talent, musical depth, bombast, humour and sheer fun.
Audiences as well as artists
like Paul McCartney, David
Sanborn, R.E.M. and others
are awestruck by this phenomenal quartet. Elvis
Costello once said, "I'd much

countless albums the music is
as vital and exciting as ever.

"Scofield can rock a house with
altered Tin Pan melodies, post-Bop
harmonies, and what-the-hell-spirit."
-Down Beat
There is no guitarist more influential
in the jazz world today than John
Scofield. His sound and sinuous
stylings are immediately identifiable
but his creative take on the soulfulness of the music sets him apart
from the rest of the pack. His tunes
are hummable, hard to get out of
your head once they get inside. He
has performed with a legion of great musicians including a
three year stint with the legendary Miles Davis. On his seventh
recording for Blue Note, Groove Elation, the poll-winning guitarist delves deeply into the groove with bassist Dennis Irwin,
Hammond B-3 organistLarry Goldings and super funky
drummer Idris Muhammad (also his Jazz Festival band). A
cauldron of undulating rhythms and bluesy lines, the album
features Scofield at his funkiest colouring the groove with
urgent blue notes, stinging tones and daring free-flowing
improvisations. This incredible band (groovemeisters!) combines blues, funk and groove jazz that will put a smile on
your face and rhythm in your soul. jJI

straight to international fame.
Originally a sax/bass/drums
lineup, their hip and funky
street performances drew
crowds across Canada and
Europe. Now, with five fulllength albums and innumerable
tours to their credit, they've
changed their lineup and their
sound. They've always played
dance and hip hop grooves
intertwined with sinuous jazz
solos, but they've modernized
their sound, added a harder
edge and slowed down the
grooves. And audiences are
raving! The new Demons
include founder Richard
Underhill on alto saxophone,
bassist Mike Milligan, drummer Farras B. Smith and guitaristEric St. Laurent. Life On

This group brings together three of the most widely respected improvisers on t_heplanet.
Each has a long and illustrious list of credits having played with a who's who of contemporary jazz masters. Alto saxophonist/composer Oliver Lake was an active member of the
Black Artist Group in St. Louis before moving to New York in the mid-70's. A co-founder
of the World Saxophone Quartet with David Murray, Hamiett Bluiett and Julius Hemphill,
he is still an integral part of that band though he leads his own groups as well. Bassist
Reggie Workman hos racked up an astonishing number and range of credits: Wayne
Shorter, Art Blakey, Marilyn Crispell and his most famous association as a member of the
John Coltrane Quartet. He is also a forceful leader who has moved on to explore straightahead, free jazz, classical and
Eastern music sensibilities.
DrummerAndrew Cyrille is a master percussionist whose long tenure
with pianist Cecil Taylor is well documented. He is at ease working in
free improvisational situations as
well as in more orthodox jazz
structures. Geri Allen, Jeanne Lee,
Carla Bley and Stanley Turrentine
are but a few of the many people
he's worked with. The trio opens
