May 24/96 Faculty Development Bill Schermbrucker, SPRING GRANT AWARDS The Faculty Development Committee met recently to adjudicate the grant applications for conferences and research for Spring 1996. Twenty applications were received, of which two were ruled partly eligible, one was forwarded to the next granting period, and the rest were tuled eligible. (Committee members are not excluded from application, but leave the Committee while their applications are considered.) A total of $12716 was awarded. Within the usual budget cap of $1000, the Committee made allocations based on the criteria published in the Faculty Development Handbook. The following were awarded grants: Rosslyn Anne (Early Childhood Care and Education), $872 to attend the International Play Therapy conference in Toronto. Nadine Bohna (Music), $900 to attefd a Music Theatre Techniques and Repertoire conference given by the National Association of Teachers of Singing at Southern Methodist University at Dallas, TX. Jolene Bordewick (Disability Support Services), $855 to conduct a study entitled "What’s Reasonable?" of standard support services and accomodations provided to students with disabilities in Canadian universities and colleges. Tony Carter (Business Administration) $100 to attend the WCCCE conference being held at UNBC in conjunction with the articulation meeting for Computer courses. Daniel Frankel (Counselling, DSS), $623 to attend the Chairs Development Conference on Bowen Island. Josephine Jungic (Art History), $1000 to conduct research on Leonardo and Raphael and prophecy at the Warburg Institute and British Libraries, for a scholarly article. Lars Kaario (Music), $500 towards taking the Capilano College Singers to the Association of Canadian Choral Conductors’ National Symposium in Québéc City, with several concert performances in Québéc City and Montréal. Peter Kellington (Media Resources), $585 to attend the Banff Television Festival, to investigate student access to and practicum placement in specialty channels. Carolyn Kenny (Music Therapy), $1000 to give presentations at the Eighth World Congress of Music Therapy in Hamburg, Germany, and participate in a prior symposium at the University of the Arts in Berlin. Wendy Lynn (Math/ARC), $657 to attend the Art & Committee Chair Math Conference ’96 at SUNY, Albany, to further investigate ways of making math more appealing to students, especially females. Ethelyn McInnes Rankin (Counselling/International Ed), $900 to attend the workshop "Training Design for International and Multicultural Programs" at the Summer Inst. for Intercultural Communication, Forest Grove, OR. Sandra Moe (Psychology/Women’s Studies) $675, to co- develop a new Women’s Studies Course at the Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico (co-funded by BCIIE). Robert Muckle (Anthropology), $900 to attend the Conference of the Soc. for Am. Anth. in New Orleans, partly to revise a book to be published by UBC Press. Beverley Reid (Media Resources), $1000 to attend the Banff Television Festival, to explore placement for graduating students and discuss international licensing of three of her productions already acquired by Canadian broadcasters, and to launch a feature-length documentary in pre-production. Sandi Rogers (Media Resources), $240 to attend "Connections ’96" at SFU Habourfront and the Waterfront Centre Hotel, to gain new perspectives on technology and education. Robert Sherrin (English/The Capilano Review), $226 to participate, by invitation, at the Playwrights’ Colony at the . Banff Centre, to collaborate on producing a performance script. Sukhi Sohi (Counselling), $234 to attend workshops on Career Counselling, Grief & Loss, and Personal Development and Change at the 1996 International Counselling Congress: Counselling in the Global Community at UBC. Sharon Thesen (English), $903 to present a paper on her collaborative research with SFU’s Ralph Maude on Charles Olson’s correspondence with Frances Bolderoff, at the "American Poetry of the 1950s" conference at the University of Maine, Orono, ME. Gerrie Waugh (Applied Business Technology), $546 to attend the Great Teachers’ Seminar presented by the BC Centre for Curriculum and Professional Development, at Naramata.
