2008/2009 Season Brochure Dear Friends, We are proud to present our eighth season of musical events, which will include two fall concerts, a spring concert, and a new edition of our annual six-part educational series Music of the Whole World. The programme promises a fresh, exciting palette of sounds and ideas from many different musical traditions, including several world premieres by Canadian composers. It is thanks to the Vancouver community, in all of its cultural manifestations, that we continue to build our organization. Thank you for joining us in celebrating all that is great in our multicultural Canadian society, and adding your voice to the intercultural dialogue that we all need and value. 3 The ABC's of Intercultural Music 4 Balinese Gamelan and Western Composition Tuesday, February 17, 2009, 7pm Wednesday, April 22, 2009, 7 pm VICO composers present a sneak preview of our March 2000 concert, including new pieces written for non-Western instruments by student participants in VICO' s first ever high school workshop. Composer Michael Tenzer will provide an introduction to both the Balinese tradition and his own intercultural music, which combines Gamelan and Western ideas. The aim of this six part series is to provide access to educational materials that deal with the art of inter-cultural music making. Whether you are a veteran composer, a beginning student of music, or simply a music lover wishing to learn more about the many musics of the world and the bridges between them, this series is an event you will not want to miss. Intercultural Composers and their Music: Past and Future 2 Middle and Near Eastern lntercultural Horizons Wednesday, November 5, 2008, 7 pm Wednesday, January 14, 2009, 7 pm Mark Armanini will speak about the ongoing legacy, in BC and Canada, of composers who have worked and are working in an intercultural medium. Musical demonstrations will be accompanied by a photo exhibit of composers past and present. Gordon Grdina, composer and leader of Middle Eastern- PersianIndian fusion band 'Sangha', will present a program highlighting his intercultural work. India and the West: a History and a Future 6 The Intercultural View from Vietnam Wednesday, June 10, 2009, 7 pm Wednesday, August 5, 2009, 7 pm Composer Moshe Denburg will take audiences on a journey through the history of intercultural collaborations between India and the West, culminating in a look into the future possibilities of combining these two fascinating traditions. Master musicians Chi Khac and Bic Hoang will introduce audiences to Vietnamese music and instruments, and demonstrate their use in intercultural ensembles. This major choral work - based on classical Weisgarber texts from the 8th century Manyoshu Anthology of the Imperial Court of Japan, and sung in Japanese -was commissioned in 1984 but has never yet been performed in its entirety. The VICO is proud to offer the world premiere (in a new arrangement by Mark Armanini) of this seminal work, as the centrepiece of an exciting programme that also includes The Inner Light (by another pioneer of inter-cultural music: George Harrison of Beatles fame), the world premiere of Habitaculum - Dwelling Placefor choir and intercultural orchestra by Vancouver composer Larry Nickel, and Nasime Shiraaz(from Dreams of the Wanderer) by Moshe Denburg, featuring the astounding Iranian Tenor Amir Haghighi. We will be joined by Joel Bons, a visiting composer and artistic director of the Atlas Ensemble, a kindred intercultural orchestra from Amsterdam. The program will include pieces by Armanini, Denburg, Bons, several young Vancouver student composers, and newly commissioned works by Vancouver composers, tba.
