Orchestra (Community Orchestra for Research and Development) of the late 1970s.Inspired by the exploration of improvisation in a large ensemble context, Orkestra Futura continues to explore how the composed form and improvisation can best enhance each other. Boasting a 23-year history, this ensemble is rightly renowned for its longevity and creative output of improvised music. Under the NOW umbrella (in its 35th year), Orkestra Futura is the only ensemble of its kind in Canada - an improvisational group with a unique West Coast music style. II 1: I I, The Right Amount Stefan Smulovitz - music Tom Cone - words The Right Amount began in 2004. Originally intended for Guitar and Voice (specifically Ron Samworth and Viviane Houle) it never quite found the right form. Over the years we would joke about finding the Right Amount but it never seemed to happen. In January of this year I saw Tom at a show - he took me aside and told me of his cancer and said we need to write a piece together. When I saw him in February he was already getting tired. Seeing Tom when he was awarded the Lifetime Achievement award he had a sparkle in his eye and said we are working on that piece right? It's amazing how many people's lives Tom enriched. Tom's strings creating connections and bringing so many people together. A world with out Tom is so hard to imagine. I ache to see him grinning at this show. Hear his quirky but incredibly honest feedback. I want to know what he thinks and be introduced to some new wonderful person I would not have met otherwise. I miss him already. I know so many do. With Jove to Karen and Ruby and to a man who always had The Right Amount.
