January 21/98 FACULTY DEVELOPMENT Jolene Bordewick, Committee Chair, 1997/98 Members of the Faculty Development Committee met in late October to adjudicate the Conference and Research Grant Applications. It is with pleasure that the Committee announces the following 10 awards: Marcy Dayan, PCAD/Health Department received $900.00 to attend a National Congress presented by the Canadian Physiotherapy Association in Winnipeg, MA R. Wayne Eastcott, Studio Art (Printmaking) Department received $738.19 to attend an International Symposium and Exhibition Program on Printmaking and Image Culture at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta. Penny LeCouteur, Chemistry Department received $400.00 to attend, and to speak at the 81st Canadian Society for Chemistry Conference to be held at Whistler, BC later this year. Kazuko Mito, Language Department was awarded $250.00 for a TESL Canada Conference on World Skills, Language and Living which was held in Victoria, BC. Nancy McMaster and Stephen Williams, Music Therapy Department, were each awarded $900.00 to attend an important Music Therapy Conference: Bridging the Future which was held in Windsor, Ontario last summer. Funds in the amount of $900.00 were also awarded to Bob Morris, Continuing Education Department, to attend the Learning Resources Network Conference in San Diego, California. This Conference placed a focus on lifelong learning. Don Perro, Commercial Animation Program, attended and offered two presentations at the Annecy International Animation Festival in Annecy, France. He was able to discuss the Commercial Animation Program at Capilano and to outline its unique aspects. The Committee awarded Don $1,000.00 ‘John Brownlee-Baker, Business Administration Department was invited to return to, and attend an international Seminar and Symposium on Northern Asian Business at the Kushiro Public University of Economics in Kushiro, Hokkaido Japan. A portion of his costs were borne by the Kushiro Public University, as an invited guest, and he received an award of $800.00 towards his expenses from the Faculty Development Committee. Lucas Foss, Counselling Department received $500.00 to attend an International Conference on Spirituality in Business in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. The Committee wishes to extend congratulations to the award winners. The total awards for the fall, 1997 amounted to approximately $7,600.00. Please take this as a gentle reminder to award recipients to submit written reports to the Committee. Several faculty members have asked about having an opportunity to present “poster sessions” outlining their successful PD activities. It might be enlightening to learn - about the various activities and events in which our faculty participated. Inquiries and interested volunteers would be gratefully accepted for PD week in May. The faculty survey results indicated that May is likely the best time for the Instructional Skills Workshop, so information for the ISW workshops will be forthcoming.
