Paul Avery (Psychology) is presently running a two-weekend
core training workshop for A.I.D.S. Vancouver volunteers. All
volunteers must have this training which focuses on the changing
face of A.I.D.S., the needs of clients, the role of volunteers,
communication skills, homophobia, illness, death, and dying.
The volunteers go on to work as “Buddies”, help line workers, or
members of the Speakers’ Bureau.

John Fairlie (Business Administration) composed the piece,
“Three Piece Suite” which will be played by the group
Scaramouche at the October 24 noon hour concert series in
H113,1-2p.m.

Congratulations to former students Jennifer Harry and Joan
Ritchie who won scholarships at UVic this year. Jennifer was
awarded the $1000 Alexander, Holburn, Beaudin and Lang
scholarship and the $2095 Edwards, Kenny, and Bray Summer
Employment Scholarship. Joan won the $2000 ICBC
scholarship.

Monday, October 23
The College will enjoy a musical treat at lunch time with a visit
from this year's Alcan Jazz Competition winner, Fifth Avenue.
The five-piece band will play free of charge in H113 at 12:30.

Tuesday, October 24
The Noon Hour Concert Series continues with Scaramouche
playing “Three Piece Suite” composed by John Fairlie of
Business Administration. H113, 1 - 2 p.m.

Wednesday, October 25
Dr. Louise May, Coordinator of the International Business Co-op
Program, will speak at Douglas College on “Preparing Canada
for the Pacific Century”. 7:30 p.m. in Room 1717. The talk is
part of the College’s International Week events.

October 25 - 29
Don’t miss the second annual Writer’s Festival beginning
Wednesday. Visiting authors include Bharati Mukherjee,
Mordecai Richler, Spider Robinson and many more.

Thursday, October 26
The North Shore Enterprise Development Centre is holding an
Open House from 4 - 7 p.m. Drop by for entertainment,
refreshments, and a look at their displays. The Centre is located
at 148 East 2nd in North Van.

Saturday, October 28
Dirk’s Marionettes, of the Vancouver Guild of Puppetry, present
Rumplestiltskin at 1:30 and 3 p.m. at the Presentation House. $4.

November 4 and November 5
What are the legal rights of union members in Third World
countries? How do labour disputes get resolved? These are just
two of the issues that will be discussed during the Third World
seminar put on by the Labour Studies Program. The fee is $25
for both days, which run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Materials will cost

November 29 - December 1
ACCC is sponsoring a a workshop focussing on women and the
environment in overseas development at Vancouver Community
College. The two and one-half day seminar will look at CIDA
policies and practices, ‘gender’ planning, and international
environmental issues, among other topics. The deadline for
applications is November 14, with a $25 price break for
