Development Roundup P ermit us in Development to introduce ourselves. We are part of the College Relations Department, but we implement the goals and objectives of the Capilano College Foundation, assisting it to raise funds to support College students and programs. This office consists of me, Lana Robinson, the director of Development, and my assistant, Christine Craft. Christine joined the College last February and I arrived in April. In addition to raising funds for scholarships, bursaries and capital equipment needs, we are also the Alumni Relations office. We work closely with special committees of the Foundation Board on such projects as the theatre campaign and planned giving. We are looking forward to working with a new committee of the Foundation called the Capital Planning Committee. In conjunction with the College, this committee will design the appropriate fundraising strategies to support our major needs as we move into the next century of education. Presently known as Resource Development, we will be the Foundation Office when we move into the new student services and instructional building. We feel this will clarify our role, as the Foundation is the College’s vehicle for increasing private philanthropy. So what are we concentrating on at the moment? The Theatre Campaign The new 350-seat theatre requires $400,000 in special equipment needs in order to function as a full-performance theatre for both our students and the community. Under the chairmanship of Bob Kadlec, a committee of the Foundation Board was formed last January and has raised close to $140,000, in large part from the corporate sector. This committee, which will continue to Moolena, the saw playing Jersey (Doug Cameron), had no problem herding in an audience at the theatre campaign kick-off in the Sportsplex. focus on major gifts, has been joined by anew committee — the Community Phase Committee — which will be seeking a broader base of support. The focus of this part of the campaign is smaller gifts with the maximum being $500 to support a seat in the theatre. Donors get their name on a seat as well as on the donor wall! To date, 35 chairs have been sponsored. A particular seat can be chosen by visiting us across from the Purchasing Department in the basement of the Arbutus building. Alumni The College Relations Department prepares two editions a year of almamatters, a newsletter for alumni which goes to 7,000 Capilano College graduates. The fall edition will be out in November and can be accessed through the College’s primary home page. This edition will feature a new Alumni Benefits Program called Keep In Touch, designed to strengthen our relationship with our graduates. The Alumni Association Advisory Council will also be selling brass frames for graduation certificates at the fall graduation on November 7. The frames are $40 each, including taxes. They are also available in the Book Store or from our office in the Arbutus building, room O10B. Coming to a Mail Box Near You! Within the next month, the Foundation will be seeking funding support from all its constituencies — boards, all College employees, and donors — as part of the annual campaign. This is a major initiative from which the majority of the funds for scholarships, bursaries and capital equipment are generated. Most of the donors to the Foundation are individuals who express their commitment to quality post-secondary education by making an annual gift to the College. These gifts enable the Foundation to award more than 400 scholarships and bursaries on an annual basis. It is an extremely gratifying experience to be present at an awards night. Unfortunately, we are only able to help 60 per cent of those who request our assistance. That is why we are seeking a greater level of support from both inside and outside the College for the Scholarship and Bursary Program. Another area of focus in respect to capital equipment is the new child care centre scheduled to open on October 21. The centre will require an additional $80,000 over the next two years for playground and activity equipment. If you would like to discuss your participation, or any aspect of the Foundation’s activities, we would be glad to meet with you. Contact us at local 2566 or 2765. Submitted by Lana Robinson @nformer
