Art students win awards Three second year Graphic Design and Illustration students have been chosen to receive awards from the B.C. and Yukon Community Newspapers Association (of which the North Shore News is a member). Kirk Lawton and Cheryl Painter will receive $250 and Paul Paquette $200 at a luncheon on Friday, October 2 at the Delta Airport Inn. Under the circumstances, we expect them to get great media coverage. Cap grads in the movies Stakeout, the current hit movie with Richard Dreyfuss that’s playing around town, had two graduates of the Media Resources Program listed in the credits. Klaus Melchior was an assistant cameraman and Jack Rupp was the stunt coordinator. In addition, one of our former business students had a bit part. Soccer teams look good Joe lacobellis is very happy about the roster of new players he’s signed up for the Blues Men’s Soccer team this fall. “I think we’ve got an excellent chance of pulling off our third provincial title this year,” he commented. “We have four top players from the lower mainland, so together with those returning from last year’s team and the other new players we should provide some pretty strong opposition in this league.” Among the new players are Eamon Ward from Sutherland, Franco Diligenti from Hillside, Robert Reed from Surrey and Raymond Pang from Churchill Secondary. All four were on the B.C. Under 18 Select Team in 1987, and Reed and Diligenti are National Under 19 Team prospects. Cap grad plays in World Cup Soccer Capilano graduate Rick Celebrini, who played for two years on our team, has gone on to professional soccer. Since signing with the Edmonton Brickmen in May, he was chosen to represent Canada at the Pan American Games in Indianapolis and is also scheduled to participate in the World Cup of Soccer Under 19 in Chile this October. Originally from Burnaby North high school, Celebrini took Arts and Sciences courses here, and he plans on taking physiotherapy at UBC after the World Cup championships. Women’s soccer off to good start Cap has attracted two of the North Shore’s star women soccer players this year. Jackie Mudge, from Carson Graham was on the Under 18 B.C. Select Soccer team for 1986 and 1987 and has been a leading scorer for the Lynne Valley Under 18 Renegades. And, coming to us with a remarkable record both in athletics and academics is Laura Pupp from Sutherland who is arriving with no less than four scholarships. In addition to two major soccer scholarships, she has been awarded a Capilano College Scholarship for Humanities ($500) and a CUPE scholarshp ($300). She played for the Lynne Valley Renegades, the Under 18 B.C. Select Soccer Team, and was a member of the B.C.Team in the Western Canadian Championships held in Regina August 21 to 24. Facing AIDS: Video available A BCTV series on “Facing AIDS” is now available through the Media Centre. This series was produced by BCTV at Douglas College and Paul Avery was one of the guest experts on the panel. After the series was taped, he suggested to the Health and Safety Committee that it be made available here, so it was videotaped by Dianella Knight in MPC. This is a three hour series—if you’d like to borrow it see Sharon or Judy in Films. Art program gets accolades Faculty members in the Studio Art program were rather chuffed to see a review in Artery magazine which favourably compared their grad show to that of Emily Carr. To quote: “It might well be worthwhile to compare the ECCAD grad show with an admittedly more select offering by students from the studio program at Capilano College, held at Robson Square over late May and early June. Cap students have the freedom to explore many media without having to move to the ghetto of an isolated major. ... “Programs such as Capilano College’s receive far too little criticial attention. More importantly the work from the Cap students shows a much fuller concep- tion of contemporary art-making; an attention to craft values, a less slavish attention to current trends, a willingness to engage in critical issues with maturity. What more can we add?
