the The Women’s Resource Centre will be presenting three students with Rita Johnson Memorial Scholarships on Friday, December 18 at 1:00 pm. Interested persons are more than welcome to come and see Judith Anne Guertin, Megan Arundel and Sarah Sample receive their awards. Judith Anne Guertin is a mature student who graduated from the Surface Land Agent Program at Olds College in Alberta with Honours in 1983. She is presently in her first year in the Legal Assistant Program, where she has attained the highest GPA in the class—3.79. Judith has raised two children on her own while pursuing studies and has been involved in Single Mothers’ Support Groups in Edmonton and Calgary, and has participated in counselling groups such as Mental Health and Single Parents in Vancouver. Among her interests are photography, writing and weight-training, and she hopes eventually to get a degree in Law. Megan Arundel is also in the Legal Assistant Program, and is a mature student who previously studied General Arts at SFU. She has worked for the B.C. Federation of Women-Prison Action Sub- Committee, which sponsors women’s groups at Lakeside Prison (Oakalla); the Vancouver Women’s Health collective, where she was Administrative Assistant; and was coordinator of several discussion series on women’s issues that took place in Montreal. A single parent, Megan enjoys hiking, cooking and volunteer work. Sarah Sample is a mature student in the Bachelor of Music Transfer Program, and her goals are to continue her studies in Musicology or Music History, and to research Women and Music. Her volunteer work includes Crisis Counselling at the Calgary Distress Centre; Radio operator for the Co-op Radio program “Women of Note” (a feminist classical/jazz program); and she has been working on the Capilano College Women’s Lecture Series. She enjoys reading, cross-country skiing, hiking, and music.
