SOCIO-ECONOMIC STUDY Capilano College rates high Capilano College leads all other colleges in the province in a socio-economic study of college students conducted by John Dennison of UBC and Gordon Jones of Vancouver City College. Capilano students have the wealthiest and best-educated parents of students attending any college, and the highest percentage of Parents in managerial or professional oc- cupations. The survey shows that fathers of 57.9 per cent of the students at Capilano hold either menagerial or professional jobs. The next highest is Vancouver City College, with 40.8 per cent. A total of 15.9 per cent of fathers of Cap- ilano students hold Bachelor's degrees, com- pared with 6.4 per cent for the next highest, the College of New Caledonia. Graduate degrees are held by 10.8 per cent of Capilano students, with Vancouver City College the next highest — 8 per cent. Dennison and Jones reported that Capilano wos consistently at variance with other colleges in practically all aspects of the survey. “The tendency for the Capilano data to be located at the upper end of the con- tinuum is remarkably consistent,’’ they re- ported. The survey asked for such information as the country of birth of the student's father, approximate total income, highest educat- ion level of brothers and sisters, and father's and mother’s occupations. The survey showed that 45.8 per cent of the Capilano students had brothers or sisters who attended college, with Vancouver City College the next highest — 39.4 per cent. “The data indicates that the colleges are attracting students from a broader socio- economic base compored with the univer- sities,’ said the report. In this regard, colleges are meeting the challenges which they have long accepted.” The survey was confined to students on the academic program. “It would be important to examine the socio-economic backgrounds of these stu- dents before the broad role of the colleges in this respect could be confidently assessed,”’ the survey added. “Must meet needs of all’ “There is no question that our concern is to meet the educational needs of all of our community, not just the high socio-economic group,”’ Principal Glenesk said, in commenting on Dr. Dennison's study. “We serve the three school districts and every indication points to an increased proportion of students responding to career or job-related courses and programs. “The report of Dr. Dennison only points out how much work is ahead of us in serving the needs of all of our college region. “So far we have been meeting the needs of one area better than another because of our location."* 4) a \ a Principal Gler looks on.
