Don’t just stand there, PICK IT UP! When you go into the cafeterias this week you should be able to spot three large bins emblazoned with recycling posters which urge you to deposit your pop cans rather than throwing them out (or littering the campus with them). This is the start of a long, long, LONG overdue recycling campaign on campus, coordinated by the Outdoor Recreation Environmental Committee and campaign organizer Christine Imler (first year Outdoor Recreation student). The Outdoor Rec students will be collecting the pop cans for refund and putting the money towards transportation costs for volunteer trail maintenance and trail blazing projects. Pop and juice cans are made of aluminum (aluminium for purists), a metal which requires tremendous amounts of energy to produce. Recycling aluminum saves 92% of that energy, making it one of the prime targets for recycling campaigns. However, Capilano College also goes through great amounts of other recyclable materials— paper being one glaring example—and there is considerable potential for more thorough recycling here. If you have any bright ideas on this subject, or are willing to help in organizing recycling systems this fall, contact Christine Imler in Outdoor Rec, or Information Services. And, if you see pop and juice cans lying around the campus, PICK THEM UP and put them in the recycling bins. Natural resources are finite and it is senseless to squander them, so don't just pay lip service to recycling—do something to help. Congratulations to first year Music Therapy student Susan Summers, who won the $300 Music Therapy Award donated by the Imperial Order of the Daughters of the Empire (IODE), Lions Gate Chapter. Mrs. Palmer of the IODE (presenting cheque) travelled down from Sechelt to make the presentation. Summers hada GPA of 4.0 last semester, in spite of working 21 hours per week in addition to her full time class load.
