Diagnosed with Crohn's disease causing his colon to be removed, Rob fought a hard battle but says "when it came down to losing my colon or losing my life, it wasn't a hard decision to make." Inspired by heroes like Terry Fox and Rick Hansen, Rob combined his love for life, sense of adventure and a love of the outdoors to start this No Guts Know Glory: Seven Summits campaign. Samantha acts on the Board of I Magazines Canada, Canada's leading magazine association and chairs the Public Affairs committee, which ensures political decision-makers understand the industry's position on important issues. She is also active in the community and sits on the Board of Theatre Under the Stars and volunteers for the YWCA Vancouver. She is a passionate fundraiser for Hope International, a New Westminster-based non-profit organization that creates initiatives to improve living conditions in developing countries. I I J u n e 9, 2 0 0 8 — 6 p m Roger G a r r i o c k After graduating with a civil engineering degree from the University of Toronto I in 1970, Roger Joined IBM Canada in their Toronto office. What followed was a j distinguished 32 year career with IBM, including executive assignments in almost every division of the corporation, with 'touch points' covering all of CanI ada and most of North America in both the public and private sectors. His primary responsibilities were in sales and marketing management, but he also played a key leadership role in the re-invention/down-sizing of IBM during the ' early 1990s. Roger has also been very active in his volunteer life, sitting on more than 17 non-profit boards across Canada and the US, plus many business advisory councils. Since retiring from IBM, he has been assisting Destination ImagiNation®, the world's largest nonprofit creative problem solving program for kids, where he played a key role in helping launch Dlcor®, their new corporate consulting/education division. Roger has since worked with a number of major clients, including GE, Velcro USA, Methanex, Kellogg's, HP, FedEx, HBC, RBC, the BC Government and the University of Tennessee to name but a few. Spring Convocation 2008 Guest Speakers J u n e 10, 2 0 0 8 — 2 p m Rick A n t o n s o n Rick Antonson is President and CEO of Tourism Vancouver, which is responsible for the market development of Metro Vancouver as a convention, incentive and leisure travel destination. Rick serves on the Board for the Pacific Asia Travel Association, based in Bangkok, and is an Ambassador with the 2010 Vancouver Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. He is also Vice President of the Board of Directors for Pacific Coast Public Television; serves on the board of Vancouver Community College and is on the Advisory Council for SFU's Urban ' Studies Program. In the past he chaired the Board of Directors for book publisher Douglas & Mclntyre; was chair of Destination Marketing Association International based in Washington DC, and was a founding board member of the Canadian Tourism Commission. A book co-authored by Rick, titled Slumach's Gold, In Search of a Legend, spent 23 weeks on the BC Books Bestseller list. His third book. To Timbuktu for a Haircut; A Journey Through West Africa will be published this June. Regularly invited to speak all over the world on the topic of travel and tourism, his extensive personal journeys have taken him to the Galapagos Islands, on the Trans-Siberia Railway with stops in Russia, Mongolia and China, and to a four-by-four adventure traveling a thousand kilometres overland from Lhasa, Tibet across the Himalayas to Kathmandu, Nepal. J u n e 10, 2 0 0 8 — 4 p m Dee Daniels Dee Daniels is a unique talent who brings her gospel background, blues flavoring, and jazz styling to the stage - transcending the borders of musical genres. Her vocal style was born in her stepfather's Baptist church choir in Oakland, California, honed through the R&B era and brought to full fruition during a fiveyear stay in The Netherlands and Belgium where she performed and recorded with many jazz legends including Toots Thielemans, Johnny Griffin and Ed Thigpen. She also gave a command performance for the King and Queen of ' Belgium's 25^*" Wedding Anniversary. Her voice can be heard on TV and radio commercials, theme songs from TV series and her original compositions in TV and film. A respected vocal clinician and mentor. Dee presents clinics, workshops and master classes around the world and strongly believes in sharing her knowledge and experience with young singers/musicians. Ten years ago, she was the very first performer in the Cap Jazz Series, performing with students in the jazz program. She has since returned to the stage for many sold-out performances. In 2001, she established the Dee Daniels Jazz Vocal Scholarship for students in Capilano's jazz program. ; J u n e 10, 2 0 0 8 — 6 p m All Behmard ^ ^ ^ I P ^ ^ ^ H Dr. Ali Behmard moved to Canada in 1987 and attended high school in North HBBfc A'^H ff^^ ^^i^^o^^^C ^^^^ falling in with the wrong crowds, he dropped out of ^^^H ^^^^^^ ^^'^^ Reno, Nevada as a mechanic for three years. He soon realized Ip * mmm importance of education and returned to Canada to attend Capilano's W ^^s^ Adult Basic Education program to obtain a high school diploma and then open / a car repair shop. Back in the classroom—far away from bad influences and ^ high school culture of cliques and peer pressure—Behmard took to books. He i i /. found when he started focusing, he actually enjoyed learning and in that environment with the right instructors and mentors he scored very high in all his exams. He successfully finished his grade twelve equivalency and obtained his Provincial Diploma in only one year. He then started first year science, where he was named the outstanding student in Capilano College, completed a B.Sc. in honors Physiology at UBC, and went on to obtain his D.D.S. In 2001, Dr Behmard traveled to Vietnam to work at Ho Chi Man city's major trauma center to treat maxillofacial trauma patients and to promote international dentistry to other dental residents in Vancouver. Dr. Behmard currently practices dentistry in Park Royal Village and instructs at UBC Dental School.
