After a long and fulfilling career flying bush planes and performing aerial acrobatics, Margaret Fane Rutledge spent her later years in Richmond where she had a clear view of incoming and outgoing aircrafts. Aviation was her passion and when she died at the age of 90 in December 2004, Margaret, one of Canada’s greatest aviatrixes, ensured that others would have an opportunity to follow their passions, as well. Her two nephews, including Capilano Business instructor, Graham Fane, were named administrators of her estate and this year the Fane family generously donated $50,000 in Margaret's memory to the Capilano Foundation. The financial support was used to establish a permanent endowment fund that will assist a deserving The Ts’‘zil Learning Centre is located in Mt. The Adult Basic Education (ABE) program offers transferable credit courses and supports students in upgrading before they attend college or university. To date, the courses offered are: Math, English, college reading study skills, Visions (structure of intellect), and basic to advanced computer courses, including web design. Centre Submitted by students at the Learning Centre Business student to participate in an international study abroad program. “The reason I chose the Capilano School of Business is obviously my connection to it,” said Graham, who has worked at Capilano since 1980, “but more importantly, I wanted to give students the opportunity to study abroad — especially those who wouldn’t otherwise be able to do so.” The first Margaret Fane Rutledge Foundation Award will be presented by Graham at the spring awards ceremony. “Donating money from my aunt's estate to programs and charities enables us to keep her memory alive,” Graham explained. “We give money to where it matters the most and where it will have the greatest impact.” There is also a First Nations Studies 101 course affiliated with Simon Fraser University. Other courses at Ts’zil Leaning Centre include: First Aid level I to III, Food Safe, and Construction Orientation Retention for Employees (CORE). Our instructors include: Sharon Leinweber (Math), Sarah Mills (English), Robert Schuster (computers, Visions, and study skills) and Martina Pierre (First Nations Studies). Ts’zil Learning Centre accommodates people by looking at what training is needed in the community and offering courses to meet those needs. The community benefits from the Ts’zil Learning Centre. People are appreciative because it provides an opportunity to go to school without leaving the community. It also provides a safe environment where we can learn with people we know. By Dr. Robert Campbell At its busy May meeting, Education Council gave approval in principle to a new Associate _ of Arts concentration in Latin | American Studies. This multi- disciplinary concentration will provide students with an understanding of an increasir important region in our hemisphere. Council also gave approval in principle to a new bachelors degree in Early Childhood Care and Education. This program will prepare __ students to assume leadership roles as advocates, policy specialists, administrators, _ researchers and teacher educators. It is oe to mention her time that our name reflected what we do. Council also endorsed a proposed naming - opportunity: a lecture series sponsored by IKON. Over the next two years, this funding would allow us to offer three vigh-profile lectures. We also sndorsed the recommendations of the Education Council Budget Committee. The key ecommendations are that the College develop overall strategies in we development and enrolment anagement.
