Joe Iacobellis singled out for honour "By Jan-Christian Sorensen, North Shore News For more than a quarter-century, Joe Iacobellis has been a familiar face and a veritable jack-of-all-trades at Capilano College’s North Vancouver campus; a man who — despite an “aw-shucks” humility that shuns the spotlight— has a Midas Touch when it comes to the longevity and success of the school’s athletics program both at home and abroad. At this year’s North Shore Sport Awards, Joe was singled out for an outstanding achievement award. The director of athletics at Capilano College for the past 15 years, he has also made his mark as a coach for the Blues women’s volleyball and men’s soccer teams and a faculty instructor. Under his direction, the Blues soccer, basketball, volleyball, baseball and badminton teams have claimed a total of 48 B.C. Colleges Athletics Association titles and 11 Canadian Colleges Athletics Association crowns. Joe himself has helped lift the Capilano College men’s soccer team to provincial gold 11 times, and Canadian glory on three separate occasions. Of the 10 coach of the year awards the school has won since 1976, Joe has also claimed a pair of his own, the most recent in 2002. Joe Tacobellis is this year’s recipient of an outstanding achievement award at the North Shore Sport Awards. He has been a key force behind the development of the annual spring break and summer Blues Sports Camps, the North Shore Atomic Volleyball School and North Shore Badminton Academy, as well as the North Shore Sport Awards themselves. Three years ago, Joe established a men’s volleyball program at the school. Only two years later, the team was the two-time defending B.C. gold and national silver medallists. But the North Shore resident and father of two daughters has not only championed athletics at the school: he has also hetped to develop endowment funds.and scholarships for athletes, proving that while he has engineered and fostered success in the sports arena, he is first and foremost an educator; someone who is committed to helping young athletes reach their full potential both on and off the field. Joe has also encouraged his athletes to mentor youth and to volunteer in the community, helping athletes build self-confi- dence and respect in addition to well-rounded academic and athletic resumes. Because of his dedication, motivation and encouragement, there is a common thread of success that is now shared by all Capilano College teams. Proof of that came in April when the College won a fourth-straight BCCAA aggregate award. The institution with the greatest number of points at the conclu- sion of the intercollegiate competitive season is honoured by receiving the Aggregate Trophy and Banner. Capilano College accepted this award for a fourth consecutive year, a distinction that has been previ- ously achieved by only one other institution in the 33 history of the BCCAA. Congratulations and thank you, Joe! Ed Council report Submitted by Dr. Frank Harris — At the May meeting Education Council gave final approval to the post baccalaureate certificate in Jazz Pedagogy.
