One more /ook at Open House ’97 t was almost a year in the works, but the weekend of Friday, October 17 and Saturday, October 18 proved to be worth all the effort. On Friday, more than 1,600 secondary school students visited the campus, helping kick off Open House 97. They were treated to displays and activities put on by more than 50 College departments. Afterwards, the students were asked to fill out a survey and the results were extremely positive. Most gave the experience a rating of four out of five. Later that evening, close to 350 special friends of the College, comprised of donors, community leaders, and past and present Foundation and College board members, were dazzled by a spectacular affair in the Capilano College Performing Arts Theatre. Radio and television personality, Vicki Gabereau, along with Vancouver Symphony Orchestra conductor, Clyde Mitchell, hosted the theatre’s gala opening. Nicola Cavendish and Judith Forst appeared in a special video presentation, which took guests on a comical and entertaining tour of the new facility. Live performers included: the Capilano College Jazz Studies Brass Ensemble, performing a fanfare written by instructor Rob McKenzie; the Capilano College Community Choir, Cecilia Ensemble Women’s Choir, and the Capilano College Singers, directed by Lars Kaario; first-year Capilano College ACT students performed the world premiere play of Acappella? No!, written and directed by Kico Gonzales- Risso; plus, Nitecap and the “A” Band provided vocal and instrumental jazz and big band performances under the direction of Rejean Marois and Brad Turner respectively. Special remarks were presented by College president, Greg Lee, Foundation president, Allan Taylor, and dean of Arts, John Waters, who officially declared the theatre open. A reception followed in the Birch building atrium, which had been completely transformed for the evening. A waterfall of lights cast shadows on beautifully decorated tables covered with rich desserts and Spanish champagne. Rob Welsh and a team of landscapers had installed an amazing horticulture display, which remained for the following day. Special congratulations for a terrific evening are extended to the Theatre Opening committee: Alice Bacon, Fiona Black, Strachan Birnie, Christine Craft, Lars Kaario, Suzi Keohane, Grace McNab, Dick Mells, Sev Morin, Bill Murdoch, Des Price, Mike Reveley, Lana Robinson, Ninna Sherwood and David Winstanley. continued on page 4 @ e@= Capilano @€emx College Vol. XIX No. 8 October 24/97
