October 24/97 ee PEOPLE = ongratulations to Diane Blaney who successfully completed her degree work for an M.Ed. in August. She will convocate in October. Paulette Johnston, Applied Business Technology instructor at Capilano College, has been appointed to the board of governors of Simon Fraser University. Paulette has worked with SFU coop programs in communications, business administration and arts from 1987 to 1996. Leslie Richmond, Textile Arts Surface Design instructor, won the Fibre Award at the 17th Annual International Art Competition at the Whatcom County Museum. She was also a nominee for the 97 Chalmers Award, a national award of $25,000 for achievement in the crafts, won last year by Textile Arts coordinator, Ruth Scheuing. Capilano College Basketball coach Greg Zavediuk is the 1997 recipient of the basketball B.C. Coaching Award of Excellence for the College level. The award acknowledges outstanding development and performance in coaching, with emphasis on technical excellence of teams and players. Congratulations, Greg! Two former Capilano College creative writing students have won major prizes at the University of Victoria. Anita Rathje won the Millen Prize for Poetry, while Al Tepper won the Millen Prize for fiction. Both were English 291 students in 1996. Petr Neveklovsky has been appointed as the new head coach of the Capilano College Men’s Volleyball team. Petr immigrated from Czechoslovakia, where he coached in the national team program for 15 years. He also coached the SFU Women’s team from 1985 to 1989 and the UBC Women’s team from 1984 to 1985. Temporary occupant of Randi Duke’s office on the 4th floor of the Birch building is Lee Williams of the Haisla Nation. Lee is working on a special project called HALO, a First Nations initiative designed to assist students with disabilities to improve their education and acquire the skills that lead to job opportunities. The project is planned to run from September 1997 to August 1998. Capilano College staff retirees held their third luncheon on September 11 at the Sechelt waterfront home of Dorothy Webb. The weather cooperated and a great time was had by all. The group plans a luncheon get- together in May and September each year. On a Personnel note Yo might have noticed a bit of activity on the bulletin boards these last few weeks as we had a record month of staffing activity. It is still very busy, so I will endeavor to give you as much current information as I can fit into this space. Darlene Rentz (formerly of the Continuing Education and Contract Services department) is the newly appointed RFT divisional assistant and RPT program assistant in Labour Studies (replacing Alma Relkie who recently retired). Darlene’s and Adele Herbert’s positions have been posted and we are in the process of recruiting for these two RFT positions. Computer Services has been active recently. Shirley Ross won the TPT cashier/ clerk position dealing with Internet accounts. Curt Watts is the new TFT PC support analyst, and Mike Millard is the newly regularized MAC support analyst. Jodie Jensen is on maternity leave after having a healthy baby boy on October 1 (no doubt Steve G. has already put a hire in for him, too)! The Music department has been busy as well. Dorothy Holmes, the new TPT program assistant for the MAGIC division, is finally on board after being called for jury duty the day she was supposed to start her new job! Her receptionist position in Music is being competed for and will be announced very soon. Kelly Watts has replaced Dan Ciarniello as the RPT technician in Physics, as Dan has left the College. Kelly also is the new TPT clerk typist in the Asia Pacific Management Coop Program, so she is a very busy employee. CANASEAN (and Ed Wong) have a new TFT project assistant. Suada Husejnagic is helping Ed with his busy International Projects workload. Suada was formerly a Personal Care attendant for special needs students at the College. Tim Paul, RPT from the A/V department is on a partial leave right now. He is at Douglas, but still helping us out on Fridays. Jaswinder Kailley (aka Kelly,) from Facilities, is also on a leave. His TFT position is currently being recruited. Zulekha Pirani (RFT in Financial Aid) is retiring at the end of this year and Payroll’s Iris Cunnigham was the successful candidate for her position. Congratulations, Iris! Lesley Cox is the newly appointed RPT accounting clerk in Financial Services. There are three more temporary part-time accounting postings available in Financial Services — cashier/clerk, accounting clerk and accounts payable clerk. Current regular full-time postings not yet closed as of this writing are the RFT admin analyst position and RFT driver position. Whew!
