Lunar Adventures October 6 Italian Cultural Center Lunar Adventures returned from a cross Canada tour this summer, just in time to play at the DuMaurier Jazz Festival. Coat Cooke; reeds and flute, Ron Samworth; guitar, Clyde Reed; Oregon bass and Gregg Simpson; drums will be providing the musical i.nterlude for authors Allen Ginsberg and Gregory Coroso at the Italian Cultural Center (3075 Slocan). The group plays original music which reflects influences from jazz and harmelodic funk to Celtic and other World Music. Their recently recorded tape Alive in Seattle is available at local alternative outlets and will soon be released on compact disc for international distribution by the L.A. label Nine Winds. Their improvisational work is expanded during live performances, featuring exciting solo work, influenced by 'free' jazz and the blues. The next opportunity to hear Lunar Adventures in concert will be opening for the Oliver Lake ·Quartet, as part of this year's Time Flies Series. The band has just come off a 37 city U.S. tour and have received t~ recognition they so deserve south of the border. Critics have raved about their drive and the energy of their live performances, and were mesmerized by lead singer, Gord Downie's stage presence. " We don't use any special effects, keyboards or even foot pedals," says Rob Baker, "I guess you could say we're a standard rock and roll band, we like the straight ahead approach; plug it in, turn it up and go." The Waterboys October 31, 1989 The Commodore The Waterboys were formed in London by Scottish singer/ songwriter Mike Scott. In early 1983 the first Waterboys record was released and the second release, A Pagan Place, released in 1984 sparked the first American tour. The band began writing and recording in Dublin, expanding their repertoire to include country, gospel and folk in addition to their customary rock and roll. They've had hugely successful tours of Britian, Ireland and Europe. Now five years later on the heels of Fisherman's Blues, The Waterboys will be play in Vancouver for the first time. With the release of his 1989 record debut, this world class guitarist and songwriter fronts a whole hew kind of group, with music that detonates a dangerous chain reac- tion, converting the musical elements to blow a hole in expectations. You may be more familiar with Stevens' guitar playing if we mentioned he was responsible for the wall of sound behind Billy Idols, "Rebel Yell." He also won a Grammy in 1986 for Best Pop Instrumentalist for his sonic wail of the Top Gun soundtrack. He's renowned for his technical chops and sessions quests that include work for Micheal Jackson, Ric Ocasek and the Thompson Twins. Stevens has long been regarded as one of modem music's most gifted practitioners. Tickets will be available for this show at the door on the evening of the performance only. Get there early. The Happening Thang October 25, 1989 Boone County October 26 Town Pump October 27 & 28 Gabby's The Happening Thang, are about to become the INXS of Australia's country music scene. They are impressive. In fact, at an Australian country music festival they impressed WEA representative, Phil Deamer, so much that he quickly negotiated a 3 year, international deal that made The Happening Thang the first and only country band on WEA's Australian roster. Their self-titled debut album will be released in Canada this month. It was produced by Hoodo Guru's vocalist Dave Faulkner and is full of true country ditties that will keep toes-a-tappin and hands-aclappin. DINNER IS ON US Steven Wright October 24, 1989 Orpheum Theatre Comedian Steven Wright-the man with the montone-will be appearing with his stoic manner at the Orpheum Theatre for one night only. You may have seen his face on such programs as Saturday Night Live, Late Night With David Letterman or frequently on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. His comedic genius has won him an Academy Award for his writing and acting in the 1989 short film, The Appointments of Dennis Jennings. Although Steven Wright's success is now assured with the numerous challenges awaiting him, the dry comedian keeps a modest outlook on his ability. As quoted in the Los Angeles Herald Examiner, article, Wright claims, "My whole act is just a funny pack of lies." With hilarity of this calibre, no one will mind being lied to.
