Grad publishes Art Book Graphic Design graduate Charles Van Sandwyk, who became something of a celebrity on campus when he won the ACCC’s National Art Competition last year, is featured in the October edition of Western Living Magazine. Van Sandwyk’s winning entry was an art book, which he has just published in a limited edition, entitled “A Selection of Neighbourly Birds”. To quote from the magazine: “Using intaglio plates, he has created nine etchings for each of the 100 copies, painted them by hand with watercolours, worked with Denise Carson Wilde at Vancouver's Winter Lily Press to design and handset the type, printed it on carefully selected, cream-coloured printmaking paper, bound it in white linen with his own hand-painted, marbled end papers, and is now (personally) selling the book worldwide for $280 a copy. Most have been spoken for.” Capilano College will be receiving one of the copies, but if you are personally interested in obtaining one you could call him at 929-1908. Teaching ona cruise ship In May and June of this year David Maclagan (instructor in Graphic Design and Illustration) and Harry Heine (well known watercolourist), through our Extension Programs, joined a very eminent list of guest lecturers (i.e. Oxford, Cambridge and the British Museum) to instruct a one month Watercolour Painting Program on the Swan Hellenic cruise ship “Orpheus.” They visited and painted in Israel, Yugoslavia, Greece, Cyprus, Italy and Turkey. An extensive showing of their work from this trip will be opening at the Harrison Galleries on south Granville on Wednesday, October 28 at 6:30, and running for the week following. Anyone wishing to attend the opening should contact the Gallery or David at local 2071, as invitations are required. A couple of the larger works will also be up for a “sneak preview” during the North Shore Forum on the Arts to be hosted here on October 17. This year’s trip followed Maclagan and Heine’s 1986 watercolour painting tour of Florence and Tuscany. What are they planning for 1988? Rumours say Drawing and Painting in Portugal—ask them for details. (Above: A Maclagan painting of a street in Rhodes, Greece.) Too bad if you missed it Approximately one hundred faculty, staff and administrators turned out for free food and square dancing at the Instructional Services party and BBQ on September 30. Doug Jardine extends thanks to those who organized the event—they are (in alphabetical order, yet!) Rosemary Butcher, Neil Chester, Suzanne Clouthier, Sharon Feyer, Leslie Gillis, Lynne Hamilton, Jeri Krogseth, Ethelyn Mcinnes-Rankin, Anne Moye, Donna Savage and Robert Turner.
