THE INFORMER PAGE 2 MAY 17, 1991 Profile: Agnes Campbell When you hear a “wee bit” of Scottish brogue coming from the kitchen of the North or South cafeteria, it’s probably Agnes Campbell giving directions to her staff. Agnes, food services director for Beaver Foods, has been scurrying about the kitchens a lot lately, because she’s had a great deal of work to do. “We never really get to catch our breath. It’s three times as busy as it was last year,” she said. Even last year was busy. Agnes discovered that when she began working at the College in June. Before coming here she worked for Beaver in Ottawa at Telesat, a satellite communications company. Originally from Scotland, Agnes served an apprenticeship there as a cook/chef while attending college. When she was 21 she moved to London, where she worked at the staff restaurant of Harrod’s department store. It was her first time away from home, and it stirred her love of adventure. After three years as assistant catering manager for Courage Brewery, she moved to Canada. In Ottawa Agnes first worked for the McDonald Club, an organization known for its support of the arts. She learned how to put on fancy meals for fancy occasions. The artistic environment suited her, she said. She takes piano lessons, and loves music, especially jazz. She wants to continue developing her music and will start classical guitar through the College in August. Agnes is also taking a Science and Nature course through Extension Services, which covers hikes and wildlife on the coast. She went for a weekend hike on San Juan Island recently and tackles one or two trails on the North Shore each weekend. Despite her somewhat hectic schedule of work, hiking and music, she finds time to relax at her North Shore home with her cat, Jimmy. PARTICIPACTION CHALLENGE gg by Wednesday, May 29 1991 parnapacnion Beaver Foods staff members Monique Helfrich, Julia Arnold, Janet Burgess, and Louise Diana pause for a photo with Agnes Campbell (centre). Her parents, a brother and two sisters remain in Scotland. Agnes visits them there every couple of years. But she’s content to be in Canada and loves the West Coast. “It took a wee while to settle down but that’s normal for everybody,” she said. “I really like it here now.” One of the things she likes most is her job. She gets a lot of satisfaction from having a great staff, she says. “They make a really good team. They have a lot of good ideas and we put some of those ideas into practice.” Agnes welcomes ideas from everybody at the College. She says she wants to hear what kind of food people enjoy and whether they are happy with the food service. Ministry Briefs The Ministry of Advanced Education, Training and Technology has announced that provincial and federal governments have agreed to launch a national version of B.C.’s successful Scientists in the Schools program. Innovators in the Schools will be a national network of programs designed to help introduce school children to scientists, engineers and technologists. A review of the three-year-old B.C. program found that the program inspired students to reconsider their course options in terms of pursuing science-related careers. Design and construction is set to begin on Cariboo College’s $8.68 million Campus Activity Centre. The new facility will provide a wide variety of important on-campus and social services for students, including: commercial lease space; bookstore; food services area; meeting rooms; student government offices; job placement offices; and international student centre. Construction is underway on the addition to Okanagan College’s Vernon Campus. The $950,000 addition will provide 6,900 square feet for new classrooms, a biology lab, and faculty offices. Completion is expected in September.
