ESL faculty: “most involved” Friday, November 27, Capilano is hosting an English as a Second Language workshop for the Ministry entitled "ESL for Work,'' but as far as activities in our ESL de- partment go, that's just the tip of the iceberg. For instance, Joan Acosta, fresh from the success of her publication Canada and You, was the TEAL (Teachers of English as an Additional Language) newsletter edi- tor this summer’ and is now the new editor of the Westcoast Reader, the Provincial ESL newsppaer. The latest issue has just come out and is, according to Rick Collins anyway, the best yet. This year's Federal/ Provincial survey on ESL, he reports, spoke highly about both these publications of Joan's. And just to fill in her spare moments Joan will be on a panel on Issues In Citizenship Preparation at the TESL National Conference in Edmonton, November 11-13. At the same conference Marlene Fry and Laura Renes will be representing B.C. TEAL and scouting talent for the TEAL '83 convention which they are co-chairing for Vancouver. Also in Edmonton will be Nick Collins who is giving a paper on Prepara- tion of ESL’ for Academic Students. This will be based on Cap's ESL 099 course, which is one of the most unusual ESL courses in the country due to_ the high academic calibre of the students. Nick will also be moving onto the executive body of the National Association as the BC representative. The ESL people’ like to modestly describe themselves as "'without doubt the most active and involved group in ESL in the province, if not in the na- tion'' and they may well be correct. Films coming The Films upcoming this November at 7:30 Thursday nights are as follows: November 4, No Nukes/War Without Winners; Nov. 18, Network; and Nov. 25, My Brilliant Career.
