Math student comes out on top Submitted by Lisa Lajeunesse A second-year science student, Zuzana Modrovic, is Capilano College’s top performer in what Time Magazine calls “the world’s toughest math test.” The William ke College student, Zuzana Modrovic (left), receives her award for outstanding student from math instructor, Lisa Lajeunesse. “A new medium is never an addition to an old one, nor does it leave the old one in peace. It never ceases to oppress the older media until it finds new shapes and positions for them.” — Marchall McLuhan __ The College's intranet has been redesigned and renamed Frontlines. The first phase of development was introduced to the College community on May 8. Changes to the revamped site were all designed to improve employee access to important information, shared documents, applications and more. Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition is written throughout North America every year on the first Saturday in December. Students who love creative and challenging math problems dedicate a full day to solving 12 separate problems. The first six problems are tackled during a three-hour session in the morning. After a two-hour break, students reconvene to try their hand at solving the remaining six problems. They then wait four long months to hear how they've done. Zuzana placed in the top third of competitors out of a total of 3,545 undergraduate students from universities and colleges throughout North America. Each institution encourages its best students to participate. Capilano College students are competing against Frontlines will include a news section called In the Loop. In the Loop is an online news announcement page that complements other print and electronic communication methods for College employees, such as the informer, the bulletin board and the College’s home page on the Internet. [his section is for daily events occurring at all three campuses. They could include: office or College closures, summer registration starts, a call for volunteers, retirement news or parties, emergency or security fourth-year math majors from Harvard, Princeton, MIT and Waterloo University, just to name a few. The problems on this contest are so difficult that answering just one of the 12 questions correctly is a substantial accomplishment. To perform well, as Zuzana has done, a student must demonstrate a strong and mature mathematical background and the ability to think creatively. Zuzana, who first came to Capilano College as an Adult Basic Education student to complete Grade 11 and 12 math and science requirements, was also recognized earlier this year as an outstanding student at the College. issues, guest speakers, changes to College procedures, or any other item that would not appear on the College’s home page on __ the Internet.
