PRESS RELEASE 1770 MATHERS AVENUE, WEST VANCOUVER, B,C, 926- 5551 November 21, 1972 An event of considerable importance to the North Shore occured today when Capilano College held an official sod turning at its new Lynnmour site in North Vancouver, This event marked the commencement of construction on Phase I of the planned College facilities on that site. Over 100 people from the staffs and governing bodies of the College, school districts, and District administration, were on hand for the Lynnmour sod turning occasion, Those officially wielding the shovel were Mayor Andrews of the District; Bae Wallace, Chairman of the College Council; Alf Glenesk, College Principal; Mary Griffiths, President of the College Student Association; and Sonja Sanguinetti of the College Faculty Association, The four year old College, which is presently enrolling over 1400 students, has been trying to acquire a site for its own buildings for over three years. The Lynnmour site is located off Lillooet Road in North Vancouver, on a ridge between Seymour and Lynn Creeks, The Lynnmour Phase I facilities now under construction will contain over 33,000 square feet of new buildings and some 17,000 feet of existing College relocate,1ble buildings which will be moved onto the site. The new centre is basically to consist of classrooms, Media Centre and Science Labs, It is expected that the new centre will be open to College students for the Fall term of next year, A community college serving North Vancouver, West Vancouver, and Howe Sound The Lynnmour development will be the first of three projected College facility centres in the College district; another is being planned for West Vancouver, and eventually a centre will be set up at Squamish. This $1,09 million Lynmnour Phase I will be the first extensive facility that the College has been able to design and construct for their own particular needs. Architects for all Capilano College facilities are the consortium of Harrison, Plavsic and Kiss. The contractor for this Lynnmour Phase I development is Stevenson Construction. Capilano College was one of the first of the new public community colleges in the province, and is now one of the largest of the nine new institutions. It was set up primarily to serve the areas of North Vancouver, West Vancouver, and Howe Sound, Since Capilano College's opening over 4500 persons have taken courses at the College, either on the Academic university transfer program, or on the profession­ oriented Career Programs.
