T H E CAPILANO S T O R Y In the early 1960s, a dedicated group of North Shore residents came together to create a place of learning for all people from all communities and from all nations. Their vision was realized on September 10,1968 when Capilano College welcomed 784 students to its first classes held in a small building on the grounds of West Vancouver Senior Secondary School. In 1973, the College moved to its current location - a 13-hectare campus on Purcell Way in North Vancouver. That same year, it began offering classes in Squamish and expanded in 1977 to provide classes in Sechelt. Permanent facilities were constructed in Sechelt in 1987 to serve the residents of the Sunshine Coast, and in Squamish in 1995 to serve residents throughout the Howe Sound Corridor. Students in Capilano's early days were taught by faculty whose values were reflected in their passion for teaching. Over the years, this commitment has remained undiminished. Its design portrays the unique territorial qualities of our region, which extends from Deep Cove to Mt. Currie to Earl's Cove on the Sunshine Coast. These qualities include reference to the animal world, to the landscape, to the directional symbolism, and to the human element. It has been carved from yew, which is a natural wood found in our region. Responsibilities for bearing the mace originated in the office of the Bedellus or Beadle D r .
