One North Shore resident has responded to the financial needs of Capilano College students with a charitable method that is gaining in popularity. Lee Grills, a longtime member of the North Shore Women’s Centre, has found that planned giving is an imaginative option that can ensure a student’s continued education. Through her estate, a scholarship in her name will be established upon her death to assist a mature female student with her education. With planned giving, a person bequeaths the money now, with donations coming from current disposable income or a bequest in a donor’s will. “For me, it’s a pay back,” says Lee. “A lot of women worked very hard in the past for equality. This scholarship will recognize that things were not always so good for women.” Lee’s involvement in assisting women began thirty years ago. Her association with the Centre began when it was established in the early 1970s. In 1992 she assisted with the creation of a permanent fund at Capilano College which honours the memory of outstanding North Shore women. The North Shore Women’s Centre Award offers financial support to women aged 25 and older who are returning to college to further their education. Today, the North Shore philanthropist Lee Grills’ gift recognizes that “things were not always so good for women.” and her husband, George, continue to donate to Capilano College through the Award’s endowment fund. Her former employer is one of more than 400 companies which actively encourages its employees to support their colleges by offering to match their contributions. “Many people working for corporations don’t even think of donating locally,” Lee says. “And many residents don’t realize that the company they work for may match their donations For more information on planned giving or on the Capilano College Foundation, please call the Resource Development office at 984-1765.
