The Informer Page 2 October 11, 1988 Aggression and Defence Ed Lavalle Speaks at International Conference Ed Lavalle, (Political Science and Labour Studies) had a busy summer this year. In addition to two months spent in Geneva and Paris on research for a study on the interrelationship of policies of the world’s leading seven economies, Ed visited the Islamic Republic of Iran where he participated in the International law section of the International Conference on Aggression and Defence. Ed is highly critical of the role played by the U.N. Security Council throughout the eight-year Iran-Iraq war, and believes that both the unwillingness of the Security Council to ascribe “aggressor” status to Iraq and its passivity over the use of chemical weapons in the region have been a setback in the development of the international law of war. While in Iran, he spoke to many officials of that country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Islamic Guidance, and visited several cities, including areas directly attacked during the war. ; Ed will be taking a leave next year to complete his study, which will include measuring the effect. of the decline of labour rights from 1976 to present.
