The Informer Page 5 June 1, 1989 E O P L = Congratulations to Bill Schermbrucker (English) whose novel Mimosa won the Ethel Wilson Fiction prize at the recent B.C. Book awards. Cap had a strong presence at this year’s event, with William Goede’s Love in Beijing named as runner up for the same prize. Dr. Alan Gilchrist, Chemistry, has been awarded the first SFU Faculty of Science Community College Fellowship in Chemistry for Summer ’89. This is one of four new fellowships in biosciences created by SFU to allow community college science faculty to collaborate with the university faculty or work on teaching material. Alan will spend the ten weeks of his fellowship tenure working with Professor John Walkley of SFU’s Chemistry department on “Chemistry in a Canadian Context”, a book of chemistry problems based on Canadian source materials. Nancy McMaster (Music Therapy) has been invited to teach at UVic this summer and will be introducing counsellors and child care workers to music therapy. Nancy also reports that the first full training program in Canada for Guided Imagery and Music (G.I.M.) will be hosted by Cap’s Music Therapy program. “G.I.M. is a vehicle for self discovery and life changes through imagery evoked by music,” Nancy explained. “Many health care professionals in the lower mainland have already expressed an interest.” Nancy’s new tape, From the Heart is now available. Contact the music department at 2951. Vicky Troup (Biology) is featured in a display on Environmental Educators that will travel the U.S. and be shown in the U.N. The display was produced by Cap’s media resources students. A letter to Doug Jardine from the North Shore Arts Commission: Again we are indebted to Capilano College for extraordinary support for our cultural community. The Forum was a positive turning point for us, and you did a masterful job as host. We were proud of the show in all its professionalism, and we loved the Night Cap singers. Alan Smith (Secretary of the Commission) is a wonderful addition to our strength. — Judy Dennis, Chair Congratulations to Dr. Barbara Todd, former History instructor at Cap, who has just been appointed toa tenure track position at the University of Toronto. She will be teaching 17th century English History and Women’s History. Dave Brewer (Purchasing) has been appointed Provincial Search and Rescue coordinator by the Ministry of the Attorney General. This is a volunteer position, which the College administration acknowledges and supports. Brian White (Outdoor Recreation) is going to Thailand, to conduct a feasibility study and needs assessment for the Rajaman Gala Technical Institute in Bangkok. He will also be lecturing on tourism needs at the University of Hong Kong and at the South China Institute and will visit the Mara Technical Institute in Kuala Lumpur. Funding for Brian’s trip came from the Ministry of Advanced Education and Job Training. Laraine Hamilton is putting her legs and lungs to work in the Labatt's Lite 24 Hour Relay to raise money for the B.C. Lions Society for Crippled Children. Laraine will need sponsors to make her efforts worthwhile, so give her a call at 2473 and pledge some dollars per mile. Bill Inglis (Business Management) will return from China June 4. Bill has been teaching and helping the management trainees at the Chengdu Management Institute with their marketing program. Look for a report on Bill’s activities in the next Informer. More Musical Chairs: New or moved staff since April 1/89: Sandra Chester, personnel assistant, will be replacing Bruce Lucas on fringe benefit issues. Bruce has been assigned full time to update all staff class specifications. This is in accordance with the OTEU collective agreement and is part of the Stevenson Kellogg Ernst & Whinney job evaluation project. Welcome to Peter Pritchard, buyer in purchasing, who is taking Rilla Hallwood’s place while she is on maternity leave. Speaking of maternity, the Counselling department has had a prolific spring. Suzanne Stewart had a girl, Katelyn Marie on May 11 and one week later on May 18, Yvonne McColl had a boy. Fraser Laurence Edward Fisher was born at 10:39 a.m. at St. Paul's Hospital. He weighed 8 lbs. 8 oz. Both mothers and babies are doing well.
