For the past 17 years, Canadian
History instructor at Capilano
College, Dr. Robert Campbell,
has had a preoccupation with
alcohol. This obsession has
brought him a certain amount
of literary acclaim along with a
higher standing in the academic
world. Later this month, Robert's
literary status will once again
be full to the brim with the
publication of his latest book,
Sit Down and Drink Your Beer:
Regulating Vancouver's Beer
Parlours, 1925-1954 (Toronto:
University of Toronto Press,
2001). “I have been engaged in
research in the social history of
alcohol since 1984, the year I
won a Canadian studies writing
award,” Robert says. That
research eventually resulted in
Demon Rum or Easy Money:
Government Control of Liquor
in British Columbia
from Prohibition to
Privatization
(Carleton University
Press, 1991). In
1994, Robert entered
the PhD program in
history at Simon Fraser
University. Sit Down and Drink
Your Beer is based on his
dissertation, which achieved
honourable mention (1999) for
the John Bullen prize.
