October 22/99 Photos by Bob Sherrin The Beady I seen on campus Ps above are a few samples of the type of beadwork English Literature and Theatre History instructor, Penny Connell, does in her spare time. “I make beaded evening bags, necklaces, earrings and bracelets -- the sort of bracelets one can buy at Holt Renfrew for $120,” Penny says. She started this hobby about a year ago with aspirations of eventually making a large beaded sculpture. Beads are expensive and Penny would like to fund her dream project by selling her current work. “I’m hoping to take our new costuming course in a year or two and learn to make a practical contribution to the Theatre department’s productions,” she explains. “All of this beadwork will be useful for that.” Penny will be keeping samples of her work on campus. Prices vary between $8 for a necklace to $75 for the beautiful beaded bags. Perfect gifts for Christmas (which, of course, we aren’t thinking about yet — at least not until Halloween has come and gone!) “I’m calling myself the Beady I,’ Penny says. “What do you think?” Human Resources update 1999 Employee Orientation The Human Resources department will be holding the 1999 employee orientation on Thursday, November 4 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. All new employees, and those veterans that could not attend previous sessions, are encouraged to attend and bring any questions they may have.
