May 16/97 FACULTY DEVELOPMENT David Jones Committee Chair The Faculty Development Committee met in April to adjudicate the Spring 1997 Applications for conference and research grants. Fifteen of the 16 applications submitted were ruled eligible to receive funding. Allocations were based on the criteria in the Faculty Development Handbook with the usual budgetary maximum of $1000 per individual. Grant recipients were: Dileep Athaide, $1000 to attend the 2nd International Conference on Geoscience Education in Hilo, Hawaii, where he will co- present a paper on Earth Sciences Articulation in the BC postsecondary system. Don Basham, $900 for attendance at the IEG Event Marketing Conference in Chicago, Ill. Louise Cantin Orr-Ewing, $900 to attend the Centre for Research and Study for the Diffusion of French, in Montpellier, France. Nick Collins, $865 to attend and present a paper (co-authored by Nick and Melanie FahIman-Reid) at a conference of the California Teachers of English to Speakers of other Languages. Their paper is concerned with the workings of the Capilano Writing Centre, with a special focus on ESL use. Susan Gardner, $1000 to attend and present two papers at the International Conference on Philosophy for Children in Iceland. One of her papers will report on the possible adaptation to primary and secondary levels of education of a critical thinking manual (written by Sue) which has already been used successfully at the college level. The second paper reports on a _ research project on teaching philosophy to children. Stan Greenspoon, $470 to attend and present a paper at the Summer Meeting of the American Association of Physics Teachers at the University of Denver in Colorado. Rita Isola, $720 to attend the Economic Sociology and Anthropology Annual Conference on Globalization in Lake Chapala, Mexico. Dorothy Jantzen, $900 to pursue a course of study in Chinese language and literature at Suzhou University in Suzchou, China. Helen (Towser) Jones, $355 to attend the 1997 BC Studies Conference in Nanaimo. Marlene Legates, $900 for two activities: (1) to give a paper "Putting Feminists in their Place" at the Annual Conference of the Western Association of Women Historians, in Asilomar, Calif. ; and (2) for research towards the production of a video on "learned women and women writers and artists from the 16th through 18th centuries." Annette Lorek, $1000 to attend and present at the Canadian Library Association Annual Conference in Ottawa. Annette's paper is entitled "Library Instruction and the Creative Use of Information Technology" and will include a demonstration of The Research Skills Tutor developed by Capilano Library faculty. Jenny Penberthy, $1000 to present a paper at the Louis Zukofsky Conference at the State University of New York at Buffalo. Her Paper will focus on the work of American poet Lorine Niedecker and her relationship with Zukofsky. John Sayre, $500 to support his stay as the College's representative at Aichi Gakusan College in Japan. Azza Sedky, $458 for attendance at TRI-TESOL 96: A Global Perspective on Language, in Seattle. Azza served as conference co-chair and organizer. Peggy Shannon, $1000 to attend and co- present a paper on "Preparing First Nations Students for College" at the International Reading Association Conference in Atlanta.
