"The world is not supposed to be like this," said Chris McDowell from the Women's Centre Steering Committee, joining Josie Young from the Student Society and College President Doug Jardine in calling for a commitment to make a change. To mark the occasion of International Women’s Day on March 8, 1991, the Women’s Studies Program is organizing a celebration to be held Thursday, March 7. Ministry Briefs The Advanced Education, Training and Technology Ministry has announced major expansion plans for British Columbia colleges and institutes: ° The British Columbia Institute of Technology will receive $480,000 to plan an $8-million Technology Block at its Burnaby campus. The 4,500-square-metre Block will house a 300-seat lecture theatre, an integrated media facility, classrooms, computer labs, and faculty offices. ¢ An 18-acre site has been acquired in Coquitlam for a new Douglas College campus. The Ministry has agreed to a purchase price of $3 million for the site in Coquitlam’s Town Centre, an area also planned to contain a municipal hall, a civic centre, an arts centre and museum, and a 100-acre park. * Kwantlen College will receive $2 million to plan a new $30.5 million Langley campus. The 45-acre site will offer 3,500 students a mix of academic, career, vocational and general education programs. Besides university transfer programs, including arts, sciences and business, the campus will feature a 250-seat auditorium as part of its Music Program. Twenty acres have been reserved for Kwantlen’s proposed Provincial Horticultural Centre. ¢ North Island College will call for tenders to build a $12- million campus at Courtenay. The campus, to serve the Comox Valley, will consolidate existing facilities and provide space for new programs. Science laboratories, a 200-seat lecture theatre, a television studio, a library and new classrooms are on the construction list. The 6,500-square-metre campus will be built on 26 hectares of forest land on Ryan Road above Courtenay. ¢ Northern Lights College is embarking on a $1.45-million renovation and expansion project at its Fort St. John campus. The project will add 850 square metres to the campus’ 5,100- square-metre building. The new offices, classrooms, and science and computer labs will help accommodate an academic enrolment increase that hit 17 per cent this year. * Fraser Valley College will expand its Chilliwack and Abbotsford campuses. The Chilliwack campus will get a new Health Sciences Centre. The 5,700-square-metre facility will house the Nursing Diploma, Dental Auxiliary and Homemaker/ Long Term Care Aide programs. The Abbotsford campus will see its Trades Centre expanded by 3,900-square-metres. In addition, the college has received $480,000 from the ministry to plan an $8-million expansion of its academic facilities at Abbotsford. * Cariboo College will call for tenders on a $5-million Arts and Education Building for its Kamloops campus. Construction is slated for late fall with completion expected in Sept. 1991. ¢ Selkirk College has received $90,000 to design a $1.75 million Education Wing for its Castlegar campus. The new wing will house a lecture theatre of 200 seats, classrooms and faculty offices. Construction is scheduled for the spring of 1991.
