We’re the main information desk for the College. That puts us on the front line.” Working on campus for 8 - 9 years, Pauline began asa pottery student, then walked into the typing pool one day and asked Claire Day if there were any jobs. She worked there one year then went to ABE for five years as receptionist. “I enjoyed student contact," says Pauline, who now turns her people skills to the constantly repetitive questions of her area. But Pauline is much more than just a patient and pleasant face. She has been taking courses over the past ten years and is now entering the third year of an English degree at SFU. She has also done several courses in art history, and she tutors English and basic literacy at the Lucas Centre in North Vancouver, is taking a math and computer course and spends her spare time with her three grandchildren. This is fairly tame compared to earlier adventures with family boats. Pauline, who has taught swimming for 13 years, has had several opportunities to use her aquatic talents. Besides being dumped in the drink unceremoniously while dropping anchor in Desolation Sound (and surfacing to a camera in her face), Pauline has braved the murky waters of Burrard Inlet to remove tangled line from their propellor. That time she rose out of the water to cheering and clapping from a gallery of men who had lined up on the wharf above to watch her. Pauline took it all in stride. After all, keeping lines clear is just part of her job. Give her a call, or better still, drop by to see her, so she can put a face to the number.
