THE INFORMER PAGE 9 MAY 27, 1992 ta areer Development by Wendy Weberg (Sportsplex) & Lynne Hamilton (ARC) If you hadn’t guessed it by now, the Staff Career Develop- ment Committee reps are taking turns at submitting newsy bits for the Informer. This time around Wendy and I are taking the opportunity to bring you feedback from workshops attended, videos you may wish to preview, and activities you may wish to include in your future planning. WORKSHOP FEEDBACK The Writing Clinic or Righting Writing with Reid Gilbert “Like he goes, and then I go, and like then he goes, and then like I go, and then like he goes and then, like we go.” We went. Excerpts from the evaluations (in English) “go” like this: “T like Reid’s teaching style.” “The workshop was useful and interesting”. “I would never have guessed a grammar lesson could be fun.” “The workshop got rid of my writing phobia.” “The humour made re-learning fun!” “Thanks again Reid for the dash bashing cure and the genetic reason for our Um’s and Ur’s.” Persons with Disabilities: Building Awareness Workshop Leaders: Norman Kunc and Emma Vanderklift with Facilitators, Lucas Foss and Jolene Bordewick Why don’ t blind people take up sky diving? Cause it scares the “H” out of their seeing eye dogs. Are you laughing? Are you embarrassed, or annoyed that this joke is in print? The joke was told to Norman Kunc, by a blind friend. It is an example of the kind of humour Norman used to lift our awareness about persons with disabilities. Norman has Cerebral Palsy (CP), also referred to as “wiggle disease” by a friend’s child. Norm also has his M.Sc., drives a car, is an author of the book entitled Ready Willing and Dis- abled, a video star, a family therapist and an international lecturer. This workshop co-led with Emma Vanderklift achieved exactly what it said it would. Those who attended learned: * to re-direct our thinking about people with disabilities * to identify our own fears, biases, myths, and stereotypes * to open up the communication process * simple and inexpensive ways to accommodate individuals with disabilities and, * an understanding of how we are influenced by limited exposure to people with disabilities. Highly recommended for a future Staff Career Development Workshop.
