February 20/98 Bob Sherrin, editor of The Capilano Review, has received a small B.C. Arts Council grant to continue research in the National Archives on a long fiction project, which he began last year. As well, The Capilano Review has received a one- time only grant of $3,800 from the Canada Council. TCR intends to use the money for production and a spring fundraiser. Will Goede, an instructor in the English department, has had a short story called Sleeping Arrangements nominated for the National Magazine Award for Fiction. Jim Mandelin, a new Capilano College student, is an inspiring and experienced presenter on alcoholism and drug addiction, sexual and physical abuse, family violence and the prison system. Jim speaks eloquently from his own personal experience and intensive study. He is offering his time and insight to College classes and groups. The Aloha, Pat! Word has it that she’s off to Hawaii where she has been perfecting her hula steps over the past few years. PEOPLE Library has recently purchased the video, Both Sides of the Coin, which is a 45-minute documentary about child abuse. It features Jim’s story and commentary. He can be reached at 980-3036. Since July 1977, Studio Art instructor and artist, Wayne Eastcott, has been the artist-in-residence at Coquitlam’s Evergreen Cultural Centre. The artist-in- residence program is designed to provide the community with an opportunity to view the process of making art. An artist is invited to work in a private studio for a period of six to eight months, where a body of work is created that will culminate in a solo exhibition. Wayne is the first artist to participate in this program. His exhibition will run from April 1 to May 16, with an opening reception on April 2 at 6 p.m. The Centre is located at 1205 Pinetree Way in Coquitlam. The Sechelt campus has a new employee whom they would like to publicly welcome. Laney Abramson is the new receptionist and will work from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 12 to 4 p.m. on Friday. She will also be working for Contract Services as their primary secretary. Welcome to Capilano College, Laney! Health Services has two new employees for people who may prefer a female practitioner. Dr. Susan Mackie, MD, will be working every Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. She is available by appointment or drop in. Dr. Debbie Collins will be practising sports medicine by referral and appointment on Tuesdays from 1 to 3:15 p.m. The daughter of Capilano College Biology instructor, Nancy Ricker, competed in the snowboarding competition at the winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan. Maelle Ricker placed fifth overall in the women’s half pipe. Registration’s Jan Merrick was the lucky winner of the $1,211 tax receipt raffled by the Social Committee. Congratulations Jan! On a Personnel! Note ynne Somerville was reappointed by acclamation as chair of the Staff Career Development Committee for another two years! Well done, Lynne. You’re doing a superb job. Lynne wanted me to remind you that there will be a series of Staff Career Development workshops with Janet Kee in March and - that a notice will be sent out very shortly. It has been a busy month, but a lot of the posting activity has not yet been finalized. Some positions still vacant include the RFT Admission/Registration assistant, the RFT Bookstore clerk I, the TPT learning assistant in Business Administration, a TPT clerk typist IV in ABT and LGAS, the RFT program assistant in CANASEAN, and the TFT word processing operator. The latest competition posted is the RFT divisional assistant in Labour Studies. This competition will attract a great deal of applicants, to be sure.
