THE AUTHOR ON THE PLAY - (the play e x i s t s ) outside of time i n a place of no s p e c i f i c locality - t o me the appeal of t h i s work i s i t s unusual degree of freedom - More than any other work I have done, t h i s play seemed t o me l i k e the construction of another world, a separate existence. - There have been p l e n t y o f i n d i c a t i o n s t h a t t h i s play w i l l exasperate and confuse a c e r t a i n number of people.... At each performance a number of people have stamped out of the auditorium.... I am at a loss t o explain t h i s phenomenon.... I had never f o r one minute supposed that the play would seem obscure and confusing t o anyone who was w i l l i n g to meet i t even less than h a l f way. - a cage represents s e c u r i t y as w e l l as confinement to a b i r d t h a t has grown used to being i n i t - I wrote the f i r s t d r a f t of Camino i n New Orleans i n 1946; t h a t was the manuscript Audrey Wood t o l d me to put away and not show t o anybody. Her r e a c t i o n had depressed me so that I thought the play must be r e a l l y q u i t e awful. Then a few years l a t e r , I was i n New York and dropped by the Actor's Studio. Kazan was conducting an exercise... they were performing Ten Blocks on the Camino Real. I r e a l i z e d t h a t Audrey had been altogether mistaken, t h a t i t played remarkably^well, and I said, "Oh Kazan, we must do t h i s . " - [ t h e reviews] were savage about t h i s play, which freed so much of contemporary American theatre from r e a l i s t i c conventions - Camino was the f i r s t time on Broadway o f which I know when actors ran down the a i s l e s and went out i n t o the audience - the audience wasn't w i t h i t at the time. they love the play now Now they are, The time f o r r e t r e a t never comes...QUIXOTE When so many are lonely as seem t o be lonely, i t would be inexcusably s e l f i s h t o be lonely alone...QUIXOTE Do you f e e l y o u r s e l f t o be s p i r i t u a l l y unprepared f o r the age o f exploding atoms? Do you d i s t r u s t the newspapers? Are you suspicious o f governments? Have you a r r i v e d a t a p o i n t on the Camino Real where the walls converge not i n the distance but r i g h t i n f r o n t o f your nose?.GYPSY We're used t o each other. Yes we've grown used t o each other, and t h a t ' s what passed f o r love on t h i s f a r , moonlit end o f the Camino Real...CAMILLE The exchange o f serious questions and ideas, e s p e c i a l l y between persons from opposite sides o f the plaza, i s regarded unfavorably here...CASSANOVA v Signs i n the sky should not be taken f o r wonders...GUTMAN Recuerdos, memories, souvenirs...MADRECITA The v i o l e t s i n the mountains have broken the rocks.'.. .QUIXOfE
