Scholarship offered Applications are being accepted now at the Financial Aid office for the Paul Gallagher Scholarship for Excellence, a new award here at Cap. The scholarship consists of a direct payment to Capilano College of - tuition fees, plus an allowance of $250 per term towards the cost of books and other educational expenses. Applicants must have completed at least 15 credit hours at Cap in any program, and financial need is not a consideration in the selection. To quote from the regulations, "In making its selection, the Committee will have regard for ... demonstrated scholastic achievement; qualities of leadership as demonstrated in the activities of the applicant; an enthusiastic and optimistic approach to work and leisure; warmth and compassion towards others and a belief in the innate goodness of people." The application deadline is December 31 and forms are available from Financial Aid. Music for lunch Don't forget to take your lunch to H113 on Wednesday Nov. 13 at 12:10 for the Music Transfer program's Faculty Recital with Arlene McIntyre, soprano, accompanied by Marnie Carter, pianist. The program is free and all are welcome. Next Wednesday the recital will feature the Deep Cove Chamber Soloists String Quartet. Bishop to speak in North Van. The well known and controversial social activist Bishop Remi de Roo will be speaking in North Vancouver on November 13. Bishop de Roo has been outspoken on peace issues and human rights, and attracted national attention this May when the Social Affairs Commission of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops supported striking workers at Eaton's. He will be speaking at the NDP annual general meeting on the topic of Ethical Reflections on the Economic Crisis and the public is welcome to attend. The meeting will be held at Queen Mary School, 230 W. Keith Road, North Van. at 7:30 pm, Wed. Nov..13. AIDS talk Monday Donna Savage from Health Services will be giving a talk on a topic of considerable interest these days—AIDS. She will be in the All College Lounge on Monday, November 18 at 12 noon to discuss information about AIDS. All are welcome. Xmas party time Christmas [L is approaching and this year the College's Christmas party is going to be held off campus. There will be a dinner and dance at the North Shore Winter Club on Saturday, December 7 from 6 pm to midnight, which will include a cocktail hour from 6 to 7, a buffet dinner from 7 to 8, and dancing (a mixed bag of tunes from the 50's on up) until midnight. Lynne Hamilton and her choral group will also be on hand to entertain us. Tickets include the dinner and entertainment and will be selling for $20. They will be available from November 15 to 30 from the Accounting Office, H building (Lynn Kroetlinger) , and M building (Leslie Gillis). The chief organizer is Sandra Chester. EDTs upcoming There is an EDT (English Diagnostic Test) upcoming on Tuesday, November 26 from 6:45 to 9 pm in L201/202. These tests are mandatory for students who wish to take first year English classes. There will be additional tests in January on the 3rd, 6th, 7th, and 8th.
