In addition to his work as a bandleader, George plays regularly with the bands of Buster Williams, Don Byron, Lonnie Plaxico, Jamie Baum, and the Mingus Band. He has toured, recorded , and/or performed as a sideman with Cassandra Wilson, Gary Bartz, Benny Golson, Gary Thomas, Steve Coleman, Eddie Henderson, Ralph Peterson, Vanessa Rubin, Steve Wilson, Jane Monheit, Ravi Coltrane, Lenny White, Michael Brecker, Mike Clark, Nicholas Payton, Sheila Jordan, Janis Siegel, Christian McBride, Billy Hart, Charles Fambrough, Rodney Holmes, Billy Kilson, Mark Turner, David Binney, Don Braden, Shunzo Ono, Lee Konitz, Michal Urbaniak and Stefon Harris among others. Colligan is a winner of a 2003 Chamber Musi~ America Grani for New Jazz Works. Only 11 entrants were awarded these prestigious grants. The substantial funding will be used for at least 2 concert presentations of a suite of compositions entitled 'Post 9/11.' The suite was written for the George Colligan Quartet, which features Gary Thomas, Drew Gress and Ralph Peterson. This group also received an Arts International Grant which enabled them to do a tour of the U.K. and Ireland in th~ spring of 2003. The Quartet appears on Ultimatum(Criss Cross) which was released in the spring of 2002. Also, George, rrs second recording for Criss Cross was released in March 2005. It is a trio recording featuring Bill Stuart and Vicente Archer called PAST PRESENT FUTURE. Other highlights of George's activities includes his tenure with Grammy winning vocalist Cassandra Wilson from 1999 to 2001. Not only did George tour with her in Japan, North America, and almost every country in Western Europe, but he appears with Cassandra in The Score, a movie which features Robert DeNiro and Edward Norton. George Colligan also won the 2001 jazzconnect.com competition. The winner was decided by over 18,000 voters deciding between 3 finalists. The prize included a gig at Blues Alley in Washington D.C. Also included in the prize was a recording of the gig: Live At Blues Alley is now available on CD. Colligan will be part of a quintet that includes fiery tenor saxophonist Terry Deane, trumpeter Brad Turner, bassist Adam Thomas and drummer Jesse Cahill. THIS EVENING IS BEING RECORDED FOR CELLAR LIVE October 20th/ 21st Uptown Quintet RUSSELLBREWING will be on hand Thursdayeveningfor ci beer tasting Ryan Kisor was born April 12th, 1973 in Sioux City, Iowa. He began playing in a local dance band by the age of ten, began classical lessons at 12, met and was inspired by Clark Terry at 15 (while attending the latter's summer jazz camp) and played with various high school all-star bands. In November of 1990 he won the Thelonius Monk lnstitute's trumpet competition at the age of just 17, beating out the likes of Nicholas Payton and Marcus Printup. After graduating from high school in 1991, he went to the Manhattan School of Music and later studied with Lew Soloff among others. He has recorded fairly extensively both as a leader and sideman and with small and large groups. Among the highlights; the Mingus Big Band (which still plays every thursday night at "The Fez" under Time Cafe in NYC's east village), the Michel Camilo Big Band (which although only existed for the purpose of recording the album, "One More Once," was arguably one of the best latin big bands recorded in recent memory), the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, Gerry Mulligan, Wynton Marsalis, Wycliffe Gordon, Horace Silver, and Walter Blanding. Kisor just celebrated his 30th birthday, so the best is likely yet to come. The Uptown Quintet is a group rich in the hard bop tradition with influences such as Horace Silver, Jackie McLean and Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. "Live In New York' the bands debut CD was recorded at Smoke in Upper Manhattan just over a year ago and has been released on Cellar Live. Ian Hendrickson-Smithhas released two acclaimed CD's on Sharp Nine Records and is currently a member of Sharon Jones' Dap Kings. Spike Wilner has worked the likes of Tony Bennett and Wynton Marsalis and recorded 2 fabulous CD's. Rounding out the quintet are two of Vancouver's finest musicians; Jodi Proznick on bass and Jesse Cahill on drums.\ THE CELLAR RESTAURANT / JAZZ.CLUB 3611 West Broadway, Vancouver, BC V6R 2B8 t 604.738.1959 f 604.738.1944 www.cellarjazz.com, jazz@cellarjazz.com Hours: Thursday to Sunday: 7:00 to midnight Monday to Wednesday: 8:00 to midnight
