A former Fulbright scholar who has researched
extensively on family life and aging has been named
as the next president of Capilano University.
Kris Bulcroft, a PhD who is currently vice-president for academic
affairs at Franklin College in Switzerland, will take up the top job at
the university in August.
Bulcroft replaces outgoing president Greg Lee, who will retire
in July after 39 years at Capilano University, including 15 years as
president.
Bulcroft received her PhD from the University of Minnesota
and had a distinguished 20-year career at Western Washington
University, serving as a professor of sociology as well as vice-provost
for undergraduate education until 2008 when she joined Franklin
College.
She has published widely on issues relating to family and aging,
and has worked as a research scientist at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer
Research Center in Seattle. Bulcroft is also a recipient of several
Fulbright Awards for research and teaching in Canada and Slovakia.
A consulting company that worked with Capilano University's
board of governors chose Bulcroft after an international search.
Bulcroft said her primary goal as president will be to position
Capilano as one of the world's top teaching universities. She added
the university's strong ties to the community place it in a unique
position to meet a variety of challenges.
About 7,500 students are enrolled in credit programs each term at
the university's three campuses, in North Vancouver, Squamish and
Sechelt. An additional 7,000 people a year take non-credit courses.
