brilliant idea crossed the mind of Biology instructor Jane Richardson back in 1994. “T couldn’t believe how difficult and/ or dangerous it was, depending on which route I took, to ride my bike the few short kilometres from my home in Westlynn to the Biology lab at Capilano College,” she said. “While serving on the Lynn Valley Community Association Executive, I learned that a lower Lynn crossing had been proposed years before.” After bit of investigating, Jane discovered that all it would take to reopen the plan would be some public interest. She also learned that the North Vancouver District had created a new position for a Bike Co-ordinator. Greg Zavediuk n another major ego boost for Capilano College, second year coach Greg Zavediuk has been named BCCAA Coach of the Year in women’s basketball. “T contacted the co-ordinator, Emma Dal Santo, during her first few days on the job,” Jane explained. “Needless to say, Emma has been running with the idea ever since.” In the spring of 1995, Jane learned that the provincial government had allocated $2 million toward a Cycling Network Program. Emma submitted a letter outlining five North Vancouver proposals with the Lynn Creek Bridge being the top priority. Jane submitted a letter of support emphasizing the need for a cycling link to: * relieve Mountain Highway congestion while encouraging students and employees of the College to cycle ¢ allow Westlynn schools better use of New Lynn Creek Bridge Opens in Early April the newly-planned InterRiver Park/sports development and Capilano College Sportsplex * provide an evacuation emergency route for Capilano College employees and students. Jane adds that further endorsement for the project was received by many other sources, including Capilano College employees, Alan Smith in the Planning Department, and the Capilano Students’ Union. Jane and Emma’s hard work, plus public support for the project has turned a brilliant idea into a reality. “T was quite excited to find out that the bridge installation is planned for the week of March 24,” Jane said, “and its public opening is scheduled for early April.” Greg Zavediuk Named Coach of the Year Greg guided his team to the best record in Blues women’s basketball in well over a decade with a third place finish in season play. The team was a major contender at the provincial tournament, and was narrowly edged out of national competition by Langara. Noted for his attention to detail, his strong support for his athletes, and his marketing and recruiting acumen, Greg credits his team with bringing him to the heady heights of “coachdom.” “T think my players had an incredible season, and | attribute my award to their success,” he said, adding, “I was voted coach of the year by my fellow coaches in the league, and it’s nice to receive feedback like that from my peers.” Carla King, a team member and all- Canadian athlete said, “We have never experienced a more dedicated and caring coach.” In addition to Greg’s award, the Capilano College Athletics and Recreation Department is also happy to announce that star scorer Carla King is one of only five women’s collegiate basketball players across Canada to make First Team all- Canadian. “T thank my team-mates for the great season we had, and for my achieving the all-Canadian award,” she said. “It was a nice way to end my basketball career at Capilano College.” The award is made in recognition of her high scoring and overall contribution to the team. 7 Submitted by John Dowler @nformer
